PREVIEW: South Dakota Sets Sights Against No. 8 North Dakota

VERMILLION, S.D. — (RV) South Dakota looks to get back into the win column on Saturday when they welcome the No. 8/10 North Dakota Fighting Hawks on the eve of the two Dakotas becoming official states in the Union back in 1889. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. from the DakotaDome.
 
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and Midco Sports, while also available on Midco Sports Plus, with Jay Elsen and Andre Fields on the call. You can listen to the voice of the Coyotes John Thayer on the Coyote Sports Network beginning at 12 p.m. (noon) for the pre-game show with Gary Culver and Jerry Palleschi, joining Thayer for the call at 1 p.m.

PROMOTIONS
  • This weekend South Dakota celebrates Native American Heritage with South Dakota football.
  • The Lakota flag song will be performed pre-game, along with Native American recognitions throughout the contest.
  • NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE: South Dakota will wear special decals against North Dakota to honor Native American tribes within the State. The Yotes will rock helmet decals with the word SUNGMANITU which is Lakota for Coyote.
 
KEY STORYLINES
  • South Dakota and North Dakota clash on the eve of the two states' 137th anniversary of Statehood (Nov. 2, 1889) for the 103rd all-time meeting on Saturday in a series that dates back to 1903.
  • USD will play their 200th Division I FCS game against UND this weekend.
  • The Coyotes lead the MVFC in both field goals made (12) and field goals attempted (15) this season, while also pacing the league in red zone offense with a 92.59% scoring rate in the red zone (25-of-27).
  • This season South Dakota is 5-2 when scoring first, 4-0 when leading at halftime, 3-0 with a rusher over 150+ yards in the game.
  • PACING THE FCS: L.J. Phillips Jr. is second in the FCS in net rushing yards (1,190), second in rushing attempts (190), third in rushing yards per game (132.2), tied sixth in rushing touchdowns (11), and 14th in yards per carry (6.54).
  • He's the only running back in the MVFC to average 100+ yards per game on the ground and is just one of two MVFC athletes to do so (B. Brungard, YSU).  
  • Phillips Jr. has jumped into the top-10 single-season all-time list for rushing yards, sitting eighth entering Week 10 vs. North Dakota.
  • LEADING THE MVFC: WR Larenzo Fenner leads the conference in yards per catch (22.1), while K Will Leyland is T1st in made field goals (10), Phillips Jr. is first with his 150.4 all-purpose yards per game, and DB Mikey Munn sits tied second in interceptions (3).
  • South Dakota has won 17 of their last 21 MVFC games dating back to the 2023 season.
  • Phillips Jr. became the 12th Coyote – and third in the Division I FCS era – to eclipse 1,000 rushing yards in a single season against Northern Iowa (Oct. 18).
  • Aidan Bouman holds a 27-13 record as the starting quarterback at South Dakota and has thrown a touchdown pass in seven of the nine games this season with a season-high three against the Racers.
  • Bouman now sits second all-time in program history in career passing yards (7,914) and fourth all-time in career passing touchdowns (53).
  • With five 100-yard rushing games this season – all from Phillips Jr. – South Dakota now has had 72 100-yard rushing games in the Division I FCS era with Phillips Jr.'s 301 yards against Northern Colorado being the Division I single-game record.
  • Walsh (at Lamar), Tillmon (vs. UNC), Nate Ewell (at NDSU; at UNI) are the only three Yotes with 10+ tackles in a game this season with Tillmon (14) now holding the season high.
  • Mikey Munn has been on a tear at cornerback with a career-high two interceptions against Drake and leads the team with seven pass-break ups on the season.
  • South Dakota is in their 130th season of college football and with their 31st head coach in program history.  
  • A win on Saturday would put Johansen tied for fifth-best in program history for wins as a first-year head coach.
  • South Dakota holds an all-time program record of 585-568-35 entering Saturday. In the Division I FCS era, South Dakota has won 91 games (91-108).
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • The two flagship institutions of the Dakotas meet for the 103rd time in series history this weekend. It's the second-longest series in USD program history by total number of games.
  • North Dakota holds the all-time series lead, 64-33-5 but USD has won the last two meetings.
  • The Fighting Hawks are 25-19-2 in Vermillion.
  • The last 10 meetings have been dead even with each team winning five games.
  • Both teams have been ranked in five of the last 10 games in the series with four meetings seeing both teams ranked (2011, 2017, Spring 2021, 2023).
