PREVIEW: USD Heads to Terre Haute for MVFC Clash

VERMILLION, S.D. — No. 23 South Dakota heads east into the eastern time zone for a Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) clash with the Indiana State Sycamores on Saturday, October 11 from Memorial Stadium.
 
The game will be streamed on with Brendan King and Austin Osborne on the call from Terre Haute. You can listen to the voice of the Coyotes John Thayer on the Coyote Sports Network beginning at 11 a.m. (CT) for the pre-game show with Gary Culver and Jerry Palleschi, joining Thayer for the call at 12 p.m. (CT).

KEY STORYLINES
  • South Dakota and Indiana State meet for the 10th time in program history in Terre Haute on Saturday, beginning a two-week road trip.
  • It's a battle of two top-25 rushing offenses in the FCS this season.
  • PACING THE FCS: L.J. Phillips Jr. leads the nation in net rushing yards (799), second in rushing yards per game (133.2), tied second in rushing touchdowns (10), and sixth in yards per carry (7.47).  
  • LEADING THE MVFC: A trio of Coyotes are leading the MVFC in different statistical categories:
    • RB1 leads in all the above bullet point items.
    • Larenzo Fenner leads the MVFC with his 27.0 yards per catch average. He leads USD with his four receiving touchdowns, a mark that sits T2nd in the Valley.
    • Punter Tyler Ebel leads the MVFC in punting average (49.1), longest punt (66 yards), and touchbacks (3).
  • South Dakota has won 15 of their last 18 MVFC games dating back to the 2023 season.
  • The Coyotes posted their second 500-yard offensive day in the 49-24 win over Murray State on Dakota Days last time out, scoring the most points and most total yards in the Johansen era.
  • The Yotes have scored a touchdown in their opening drive in four games this season.
  • He's on pace to become just the third Coyote to rush for 1,000 yards in a single season, being nearly there (799 yards, 107 carries).
  • Aidan Bouman holds a 25-13 record as the starting quarterback at South Dakota and has thrown a touchdown pass in five of the six games this season with a season-high three against the Racers.
  • With three 100-yard rushing games this season – all from Phillips Jr. – South Dakota now has had 70 100-yard rushing games in the Division I FCS era with Phillips Jr.'s 301 yards against Northern Colorado being the Division I single-game record.
  • The offensive line has been very solid, surrendering just four sacks in six games which currently sits top-10 in the FCS at 0.67 sacks allowed per game.
  • Defensively, LB Gabriel Hardman, DB Roman Tillmon, and LB Matt Walsh lead the team in tackles with 40 each and DL Caden Crawford leads the team with his 7.0 tackles for loss.
  • Walsh (at Lamar), Tillmon (vs. UNC), Nate Ewell (at NDSU) are the only three Yotes with 10+ tackles in a game this season with Tillmon now holding the season-high.
  • Mikey Munn has been on a tear at cornerback with a career-high two interceptions against Drake and leads the team with five pass-break ups on the season.
  • South Dakota is in their 130th season of college football and with their 31st head coach in program history.  
  • HC Travis Johansen has won three-straight home games as the home win streak extends to 11-straight games.
  • The home win streak currently sits tied for fourth in the FCS among active home win streaks, behind two MVFC streaks (SDSU, 32-straight & NDSU, 15-straight).
  • South Dakota holds an all-time program record of 583-567-35 entering Saturday. In the Division I FCS era, South Dakota has won 89 games (87-107).
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • South Dakota and Indiana State meet for the 10th time with South Dakota holding the all-time series lead, 7-2.
  • The Yotes are 2-2 against the Sycamores when the game is in Terre Haute, but undefeated in Vermillion (5-0).
  • The series dates back to USD joining the MVFC in 2012; that season was the worst loss in series history for the Yotes (L, 45-14) and the only time in the series Indiana State was ranked (No. 15).
  • South Dakota has shutout Indiana State twice in series history (2019, 2024) – the only Valley team USD has shutout multiple times.
  • The series has seen two overtime games (2016, 2018) with both being in Terre Haute. One was a double OT win for USD (2016) and the other a 3 OT loss for the Yotes (2018).
