POCATELLO, Idaho – Much like Thursday night in Manhattan, South Dakota found themselves trailing in the final 10 seconds of a road contest. Sunday,
Angelina Robles was the hero as South Dakota defeated Idaho State 64-63 in Pocatello, Idaho.
Â
With 2.7 seconds on the clock, USD got the ball to Robles, who hit her defender with a crossover move to get open and buried the game-winning shot as time expired.
Â
The two sides entered the fourth quarter tied at 41 after a low-scoring first half. Idaho State was one step ahead of South Dakota for most of the quarter, but it was Robles and the Coyotes who got the final shot, and made it count. Robles' game winner was the fourth three-pointer of the game and gave her a team-high 14 points in the win.
Neither side could find the bottom of the net in the first half, but the Yotes were able to establish a 22-20 lead at the half by hitting three triples in the second quarter and keeping the Bengals at just 4-for-28 from the field in the half. Eleven of Idaho State's 20 points came at the free throw line in the first half.
Â
Jenna Hopp and
Elise Turrubiates the scorers of the half for USD, scoring seven and six points respectively.
Patience Williams totaled 10 rebounds in the first half.
Â
South Dakota was outscored 21-19 in the third quarter as Idaho State hit 50% of their shots in the quarter to score more points in the 10 minutes of the third quarter than they did in the first 20, when the Bengals only hit 14.3% of their shots.
Â
Three Coyotes finished the game with 11 or more points, led by Robles' 14 points.
Jenna Hopp totaled 13, a career-high, and
Elise Turrubiates added 11 points and 11 rebounds, her first double-double as a Coyote. Thursday's hero
Patience Williams dominated on the glass, grabbing a career-high 18 rebounds and added nine points.
The Coyote defense was on point again on Sunday, holding Idaho State to 34.5% shooting and allowed just three triples to fall. USD won the rebound battle for a fourth time in five games this season. USD had 10 more second chance points to win the glass.
Â
The Coyotes are 5-0 for the first time since the 2019-20 season. South Dakota is back home Friday against Valparaiso to have a chance to go to 6-0 for the first time since going 9-0 to start the 2002-03 season. It is Wicked Night in the SCSC Friday with a 7 p.m. tip-off.
