Coyotes edge Utah State, 4-3

BOZEMAN, Mont. -- South Dakota women's tennis earned a hard-fought and gritty dual victory on Saturday morning defeating Utah State 4-3, inside Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center on the Montana State campus.

The Coyotes (3-1) rallied after dropping the doubles point to win four of the six singles matches to secure the victory.

"What a win for the Yotes and what a college tennis match today," said head coach Brett Barnett. "We lost a close doubles point and had to dig deep.

"We talked about having to win four singles at some point and we got that done."

The senior doubles duo of Grace Chadick and Bea Havlickova cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles, moving to 3-0 on the dual season.

South Dakota fell at No. 1 doubles 6-4 and No. 3 doubles 6-3.

"Grace and Bea are just playing great doubles right now and the other two teams were close," said Barnett.

South Dakota received singles wins from Amanda de Oliveira, Sorcha Caves, Selena Bird and Chadick.

De Oliveira, a sophomore, earned a quick 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles to get the Coyotes on the scoreboard.

Havlickova suffered a tough setback at No. 1 singles and South Dakota had to dig out of a 3-1 deficit by winning the final three singles matches.

Bird, a junior, rallied after dropping the first set to cruise to a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles and Caves, a sophomore, moved to 3-0 by winning the third set tie-breaker 7-3.

"Amanda set the tone in singles and got us on the board with a smart, quick win," said Barnett. "Bea played her heart out and came up just short.

"Selena and Sorcha were battling themselves at the staff and played with so much energy to win in three sets."

Chadick, a senior, bounced back after dropping the second set to win the third set convincingly 6-1.

Chadick and Bird are each 3-1 on the season.

"Grace is someone that is clutch and got the clinch in the end," added Barnett. "She adjusted how she had to play and won the third set convincingly."

South Dakota is back on the court again on Sunday morning against host Montana State.

"This team fights and does a great job playing for each other," said Barnett. "I'm excited to get back on court tomorrow against a strong Montana State team."
