CONWAY, S.C. — It was the hot bats of the Chanticleers that came to the ballpark Friday evening in South Carolina as the South Dakota softball team (14-6, 0-0 Summit League) dropped the series opener against the Sun Belt's Coastal Carolina (18-4, 0-0 Sun Belt) Friday night from St. John Stadium, ending the Coyotes' nine-game win streak.
South Dakota threatened in the top half of the first when back-to-back singles from
Delaney White and
Clara Edwards put Yotes on the corners, but USD would be unable to push across any runs. Coastal Carolina would post a pair of runs in their first at-bat of the night to take the 2-0 lead after one.
Coastal would strike again in the third with back-to-back doubles, stretching their lead to 3-0. A two-run home run would push the Chants lead to 5-0.
For the second time on the night, the Yotes would get a runner to third in the fourth but would again be unable to get the elusive first run on the board. The Chanticleers would tack on another three runs in the bottom half of the fourth to push the lead up to 8-0.
The Coyotes mustered three hits against Coastal's ace, Nicolette Picone, who has a sub-2.00 ERA on the season. The first two being in the first inning before
Sara Iburg singled in the fifth inning.
McKenna Young (6-1) got the start in the circle, going one-plus innings surrendering two runs and had three walks.
Campbell German came in out of the bullpen in the second and pitched the final three innings.
