Coastal Carolina Takes Series Finale Over USD

CONWAY, S.C. — The two teams were close to even in the hit column Sunday afternoon at St. John Stadium but it was the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (20-4, 0-0 Sun Belt) who took advantage with the long ball to take the 6-0 victory and complete the sweep of the South Dakota softball team (14-8, 0-0 Summit League) on the weekend.

The Chanticleers posted a pair of runs in the first two innings, thanks so a solo shot in the first inning and an RBI double in the second to hold a 2-0 lead after two innings of play.

The middle innings would be quiet on the scoring front as neither team plated any runs in the third or fourth innings. The Coyotes struggled to get anything going offensively outside the hits here and there against Coastal's ace, facing her for the third-straight day and her second start of the series.

Another Coastal homer in the fifth would make it 3-0, as they'd tack on three more runs in the sixth to extend the final score to 6-0.

Of the six Coyote hits on the day, Tatum Villotta led the way with her two hits going 2-for-3. The four other hits were scattered up and down the Yote line-up.

McKenna Young (6-2) earned the nod in the series finale for the Coyotes, tossing five solid innings giving up just the three runs on five hits. She struck out six Chanticleers while only walking one. Madison Evans and Campbell German both also saw time in the circle, Campbell recording all three outs in the sixth.

UP NEXT: South Dakota remains in the state of South Carolina for Spring Break. After having tomorrow (Monday) off, the Yotes will next be in action Tuesday evening at Presbyterian with first pitch slated for 4 p.m. (CT).
