Chadick, Havlickova Earn Victories on Senior Day

VERMILLION, S.D. — The South Dakota tennis team (10-9, 2-4 Summit) had the five-time defending champions of the University of Denver (9-9, 5-0 Summit) on the ropes on Senior Day at the USD Tennis Courts, but it was the Pioneers who prevailed 4-3 Friday afternoon.

Seniors Grace Chadick and Bea Havlickova both earn singles victories at their final home match of their Coyote careers. Head Coach Brett Barnett said, "Our seniors Bea and Grace ended their career with huge wins over great opponents."
It was a sea of red at the USD Tennis Courts this afternoon, as it was a 'Code Red' event which encouraged student-athletes from all sports to come out and support the tennis team on their Senior Day.

"I am so proud of this team for how we played and competed today. Congrats to Denver on pulling this match out and winning the Summit League again," noted Barnett. "I can't thank all of the student athletes, teams, admin and fans for the atmosphere that they created today. This was a special environment for us to play in."

  2. Winkander/Martinez (DEN) def. Grace Chadick / Bea Havlickova (USD): 6-4

Singles Rundown:

Though Denver took half of the singles matches to secure the 4-3 match win and the regular season Summit League title, there's a lot for the Coyotes to take away from this match.

With a largen contingent of Coyote student-athletes showing up to support on a beautiful and sunny Friday afternoon, Chadick, Havlickova, and Amanda de Oliveira all picked up singles victories in the final match of the regular season.

"I told the team we have to swing and play our tennis today. Doubles was close, we were up breaks and couldn't close out some games that made all the difference. Amanda did great staying focused and playing so smart and aggressive and applying things we've worked on all year. We had chances to win, and Denver closed out two courts on us. We had a great year, did some great things and we'll reload and get stronger for next year."

For Havlickova, in her final match at the USD Tennis Courts as a Coyote, she pulled off a massive victory. The victory, her 66th in her USD career, handed Denver's No. 1, Andrea Beltran, her first-ever Summit League singles loss in her four years at Denver. Havlickova will go down as the second-winngest singles player in program history (66 wins) and her 61 doubles victory gives her the program record on that front, the only Coyote with 60+ doubles victories in their career [Division I era].

She dropped the first set (7-6 (4) in tiebreaks. The students on her court rallied around her as she would take set two, 6-3 to force a super-tiebreak. Leading 4-1 in the best-to-10 tiebreak, some unwarranted actions from Denver's No. 1 led to a disqualification to give Havlickova the victory.

Chadick, the other senior celebrated today, also goes out on a winning note with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 5. She ends her South Dakota career with 57 wins in just three seasons, sitting in sole possession of fifth-best all-time in program history [Division I era].

She won 10 of her last 11 matches and finished conference play with a 5-1 record. On the season, she held a 22-5 record with a 15-4 mark in dual play.

De Oliveria picked up a victory at No. 3 singles, closing out the afternoon with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory over Denver's Claudia Martinez. She ends the season on a two-match win streak and improved to 7-3 at No. 3 singles on the season. She finished with a 3-3 record in Summit League matches.

Singles Results:
  1. Bea Havlickova (USD) def. Andrea Beltran (DEN): 6-7 [4-7], 6-3, 4-1 [Beltran DQ'd, default]
  2. Louise Wikander (DEN) def. Sorcha Caves (USD): 6-1, 6-1
  3. Amanda de Oliveira (USD) def. Claudia Martinez (DEN): 7-6 [7-4], 6-3
  4. Marley Lambert (DEN) def. Selena Bird (USD): 7-5, 6-3
  5. Grace Chadick (USD) def. Hana Becirovic Novak (DEN): 6-3, 6-4
  6. Natalie Cinkova (DEN) def. Katarina Curcic (USD): 6-1, 7-5
Order of finish: 2,5,6,4,1,3
