VERMILLION, S.D. — Incoming freshman golfer from Marion, Iowa and Linn-Mar High School,
Morgan Rupp is set to compete in the largest junior girls tournament this summer at the USGA Girls Junior on July 14-19 in Georgia.
"The USGA Girls Junior is one of the largest junior golf tournaments in the nation. Morgan should be very proud of her accomplishment of winning the Iowa Girls Junior to earn her automatic exemption into the event," commented head women's golf coach
Brett Bennett. "Her play over the last handful of months is deserving of this honor to put her on the stage with the best in the nation. I know the experience will be one that will last a lifetime for her!"
Hosted at the Atlanta Athletic Club (Riverside Golf Course), the championship will be hosted next week down in Johns Creek, Georgia. It's just the second time in the history of the event that it will be hosted in the state of Georgia (1971).
"Participating in the US Girls Junior is a huge honor. This tournament will be the biggest tournament that I will play in during my junior golf career," said Rupp. "I expect this experience will be something that I will remember for the rest of my life. My biggest goal is to have fun and enjoy being able to play a good course in a prestigious tournament."
The field will see 156 golfers on a 71-par course at 6,312 yards. The championship will be broadcasted in a combination of Peacock and the Golf Channel (tape delay). The first two days will be stroke play of 18 holes to cut the field down to 64 golfers. The final four days will be match play.
"I think this tournament will prepare me for my collegiate career in a couple of ways. The yardage and setup of the course will be similar to the courses I play in college," concluded Rupp. "I'll also be playing with and against some very good golfers, much like the competition in college tournaments."
To be eligible for the championship, it's open to any female amateur player who has not reached the age of 19 by July 19 and whose Handicap Index does not exceed 5.4 to qualify.
