VERMILLION, S.D. — In the final match of the Coyote Invitational presented by Premier Real Estate, South Dakota volleyball fell in straight sets (16-25, 16-25, 14-25) Saturday night to No. 17 Kansas.
The Coyotes opened the match with four straight points behind a pair of kills from
Amanda Loschen and one from
Lauren Medeck. USD was the first to reach 10 on Loschen's third kill and would hold a 14-11. The Jayhawks got on a roll in the middle of the set and didn't look back as they took the first 25-16.
USD had a response early in the second frame and after back-to-back aces from Medeck, the Coyotes led 9-4. Kansas put together another lengthy run, 9-1, to take a 13-10 lead. The Jayhawks hit .393 in the second to earn the set win 25-16.
Kansas kept its foot on the pedal in the third as they hit .448 to USD's .114 and closed out the 3-0 win with a 25-14 set win. The Yotes stayed within striking range early for the third set in a row, but a 7-1 Jayhawk run pushed their lead to nine. Kansas would score four unanswered to close out the set 25-14.
Medeck led the Yotes with eight kills and two aces, while
Kamryn Farris had 16 digs.
Sierra Pokharel also reached double-digits with 12 digs. Loschen put away six kills and hit .333 for the match.
The Coyotes return to the Sanford Coyote Sports Center next weekend for three matches for the South Dakota Classic. The Yotes kick things off on Thursday at 7 p.m. against Villanova.
