VERMILLION, S.D. — The University of South Dakota Women's Soccer team earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Central Michigan on Sunday morning, thanks to a first-half header from Morgan Sullivan, assisted by Sadie Strait.
The opening half was tightly contested with Central Michigan registering six shots to South Dakota's five. However, the Coyotes made the most of their opportunities, placing three of their attempts on target. The breakthrough came with just five minutes remaining in the first half as Morgan Sullivan found the back of the net off a well-placed header giving USD the lead heading into halftime.
Central Michigan opened the second half with more urgency, looking to dictate the tempo and equalize the score. Despite the pressure, South Dakota maintained control and outshot the Chippewas 11-6 in the second half. The Coyotes defensive unit anchored by goalkeeper Campbell Fischer, held firm in the closing minutes. Central Michigan managed just three late attempts, including a final corner kick with 10 seconds remaining that went out of play, allowing USD to finish out the match. Fischer recorded two saves in the match.
The Coyotes return to action this Thursday, hosting Northern Colorado at 6:00 p.m. at the First Bank & Trust Soccer Complex.
