SIOUX FALLS, S.D.– The South Dakota women's tennis team battled Wyoming on Friday afternoon but fell 5-2 at the Huether Family Match Pointe.
The Cowgirls (6-3) claimed the doubles point and secured four singles victories to hand the Coyotes (3-5) their fifth loss of the season.
Wyoming swept doubles play to take the early 1-0 lead. At No. 2, Eugenia Ceinos and Madlena Orlova defeated Selena Bird and Ava Doddridge 6-3, followed by a 6-4 win at No. 3 over Natalia Alves De Lima and Keta Shavishvili. The No. 1 pairing of Silver Bijlsma and Violetta Borodina clinched the point with a 6-4 decision against Kayleigh Didderiens and Anna Medvyedyeva.
South Dakota responded in singles with a pair of victories. Kayleigh Didderiens put the Coyotes on the board with a commanding 6-2, 6-2 win over Ceinos at No. 4 singles, showcasing steady baseline play throughout. At No. 5, Keta Shavishvili delivered a gritty performance, earning a 7-5, 6-7, 7-5 win by opponent retirement after a tightly contested three-set battle.
Wyoming, however, proved strong at the top and bottom of the lineup. Anas Kochelaevskaia outlasted Selena Bird in a competitive match at No. 1 singles, 7-6, 7-5. Silver Bijlsma rallied past Medvyedyeva in three sets at No. 2, while Madlena Orlova secured a straight-sets win at No. 3. Serina Abriola closed the day with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 6.
The Coyotes are back in action this Sunday (February 22nd) at 9:00 a.m. in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the Huether Family Match Pointe to take on Northern Iowa. Live stats and live video will be available.
