Panthers rally past Coyotes twice Saturday

Miami, Fla. — South Dakota softball dropped a pair of games to host FIU on Saturday at the FIU Invite, falling 18-10 in the afternoon contest before a 4-1 decision in the evening matchup.

 

South Dakota 10, Florida International 18

South Dakota came out aggressive in game one, scoring 10 runs on 14 hits through the first three innings.

McGee singled to start the game and later scored on a Carey RBI single. Iburg followed with a run-scoring double to right center to give South Dakota a 2-0 lead.

South Dakota extended the lead in the second. Evans delivered a two-run double to left center to score McGee and Hempey, and Carey added an RBI double later in the inning to push the advantage to 5-1.

Coyotes added five more runs in the third. Kersten drove in Johnson with a single to center, Brown lifted a sacrifice fly to score Johnson, and Evans tripled to left field to plate two more. 

FIU answered with nine runs in the fifth and added four more in the sixth to complete the comeback. The Panthers finished with 21 hits in the game.

Evans went 3-for-4 with four RBIs at the plate. Carey collected two hits and two RBIs, while Johnson and Kersten each added two hits in the effort.

South Dakota 1, Florida International 4

In the second game, South Dakota was limited to four hits in a 4-1 loss.

FIU took a 1-0 lead in the first on a solo home run. South Dakota answered in the third when Evans tripled to right center and scored on a White RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.

Panthers regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning and added runs in the fourth and sixth. German turned in a complete-game effort, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits over six innings.
