MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. — The South Dakota women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to Minnesota on Wednesday at the Baseline Tennis Center.
Despite the final score, the Coyotes showed fight in several spots, including a strong push in doubles play and a three-set battle at the top of the singles lineup.
South Dakota opened the match with momentum in doubles, highlighted by a dominant 6-0 victory from the duo of Selena Bird and Ava Doddridge at the No. 3 position. The Coyotes also pushed the No. 2 doubles match to a tiebreak before Minnesota ultimately secured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2.
In singles play, the most competitive match came at No. 1, where Selena Bird forced a decisive third-set super tiebreak after splitting the first two sets. Bird ultimately fell 6-3, 2-6, 10-6 in a hard-fought contest.
Kayleigh Didderiens also battled at No. 2 singles, keeping the opening set close before dropping a 7-5, 6-3 decision. The Gophers maintained control across the remaining courts, winning in straight sets at positions three through six to clinch the sweep.
Minnesota's depth proved to be the difference, as it secured all six singles matches to complete the 7-0 team victory.
The Coyotes are back in action next week on March 27th in Vermillion for the first time this season to take on conference foe North Dakota.
