Todd Hoffner

Todd Hoffner is in his first season as the offensive coordinator for the nationally-ranked South Dakota football team.

Hoffner, who has been the head coach at Wisconsin-Eau Claire for the past seven years, takes over a Coyote offense which was the best in NCAA Division II, averaging 49.7 points and averaging 583.3 yards in total offense in 2005. He began his duties at USD on Feb. 13.

HOffner, who has a 46-28 career mark as a head coach, owned the best record in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) - one of the nation's top Division III leagues - over the past six years. He also posted six consecutive conference winning records, compiling a 27-15 mark since 2000. Hoffner leadu UW-Eau Claire to a conference title in 2001 and his teams were nationally ranked during each of the last five seasons, including as high as sixth in the nation. Hoffner's 2001 squad led the WIAC in passing efficiency, was second in passing offense and scoring offense while compiling an 8-2 mark. His 2002 team was also 8-2 and defeated national semifinalist St. John's (Minn.) and 2001 NCAA playoff participant Bethel College. Last year, UW-Eau Claire finished second in the league at 5-2 and they were 6-4 overall.

While Hoffner has been the head coach at UW-Eau Claire, his student-athletes excelled on and off the field. In four of the last five years, a member of the UW-Eau Claire team has been the WIAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He also has had two Academic All-Americans since 1999.

While at UW-Eau Claire, Hoffner was involved in football program improvements, including the Carson Park Turf Project, football office complex, video editing system, locker room renovation and football endowment contributions. Prior to going to UW-Eau Claire in 1999, he coached for eight seasons at Wisconsin-Stevens Point (1991-98), where he was defensive coordinator for two years and offensive coordinator for four seasons. Under his leadership, Wisconsin-Stevens Point was the WIAC's best offense in 1993 (441 total yards per game).

Hoffner, a native of Esmond, N.D., received his bachelor of science degree in mathematics and physical education from Valley City (N.D.) State in 1988, where he earned all-league recognition in football as a cornerback and was a track and field standout in the 400-meter hurdles. He received a master of science degree (pedagogy) at the University of North Dakota in 1991. Hoffner served as a head coach at North Central High in Rogers, N.D., in 1988-89.

He spent three summers with the Swedish American Football Federation, the squad he helped coach to the Swedish American Football Federation Championship in 1998.

Todd and his wife, Melodee, have a son, Brady, and a daughter, Kiaya.
