Tagney (Jones) Walters is in her fourth season as an assistant coach for the USD softball team. She helped USD to a fourth-place finish in the Summit League and a Summit League tournament appearance in 2013.
Walters, a native of Lincoln, Neb., is coming off of an outstanding four-year career for the Coyote softball program. In 2009, Walters had an outstanding season in leading the Coyotes to a 33-18 mark in their first year of transition to NCAA Division I status.
She was named the All-Independent Player of the Year and to the All-Independent first team. Walters had a .421 batting average, which was the best in a single season in USD history (minimum 100 at-bats). Walters led USD in batting average, doubles (13), RBI (38), triples (three) and slugging percentage (.654) while being tied for the team lead in home runs (six). She finished with an on-base percentage of .486 and was 7-of-7 in steals.She left USD tied with the best all-time career batting average (.369) and was in the top 10 of several career offensive categories (hits, RBI, runs scored, doubles, triples and homers). She also was an All-Independent Tournament selection after leading the Coyotes to a second-place finish.
In 2008, Walters was a first-team All-NCC selection and finished second on the team with 22 RBI while hitting .318. In 2007, Walters hit .407 with seven homers. Walters also was a two-time selection to the Louisville Slugger/ NFCA Division II All-North Central Region team (second team in 2006,first team in 2007). She also earned all-region honors from Daktronics and was named All-NCC and Academic All-NCC and was selected to NCC Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll.
