Shay Frederick

Shay Frederick joined the South Dakota women's basketball coaching staff as a graduate assistant in the summer of 2023. She enters her first year on staff in 2023-24.

Frederick makes the transition from the court to the bench this season. She played four seasons at Valparaiso and a graduate transfer season at Butler. Three seasons at Valparaiso were under current Coyote assistant coach Gabby Johnson. Frederick was a two-time all-Missouri Valley Conference pick, leading the Valley in assists in 2021 and 2022. She scored more than 1,300 points and dished out more than 500 assists in 144 career games in her collegiate career. She finished second all-time in assists and seventh all-time in scoring at Valparaiso.

Frederick attended the WBCA's "So You Want to be a Coach" program at the 2023 NCAA Final Four. She was also a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) member at Butler and Valparaiso and a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) at Valpo.

A native of Greenville, Wisconsin, Frederick graduated summa cum laude from Valparaiso University in May of 2022 with a bachelor's degree in marketing. She began her master's in strategic communication at Butler University in June of 2022.
