Coyote women head for Jennies Classic

VERMILLION, S.D.—The University of South Dakota women's basketball team, riding a four-game winning string, will play Wichita State at 6 p.m. Friday (Jan. 29) to open the Jennies Classic at Warrensburg, Mo.

Earlier, Wichita State (8-8) beat USD, 66-56, in the Harvest Classic at Des Moines, Iowa, Nov. 28. Oklahoma City University plays host Central Missouri State Friday at 8 p.m. Third place will be decided Saturday at 4 p.m. followed by the championship at 6 p.m.

The Coyotes, who stand 8-6, are coming off their biggest win of the seasons, posting a 65-63 win over sixth-ranked Nebraska-Omaha Monday (Jan. 25) in Vermillion.

Renee Steeve led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points. Deb Petersen added 13, Karrie Wallen had 11 and Joe Haase 10, including five of seven field goal attempts. Carol Finley came up with a career high 10 rebounds to go along with nine points.

"It was a fantastic win for us," said coach Mary Zimmerman. "We'd been struggling and it was nice to put it together against a team like UNO. It was a total team effort with several players having their best game of the season. Hopefully we can give Wichita State a better first half this time. They're a good team and have been playing good ball."
