South Dakota Women's BB Team to Host Augustana on Saturday and SDSU on Sunday as NCC Continues

UP NEXT:: South Dakota (6-4, 0-2 in the NCC) will attempt to extend their three-game winning streak when they face Augustana (7-3, 2-0 in the NCC) and South Dakota State (11-2, 1-1 in the NCC) at 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 29-30 at the DakotaDome. The Coyotes have concluded their nonconference season and will host their NCC home opener on Saturday night.

RECENT ACTION: South Dakota defeated Simpson, 82-53 at the DakotaDome on Dec. 21. Mandy Koupal scored 17 points to lead the Coyotes. Augustana defeated Minnesota-Morris, 105-36 on Dec. 20. SDSU also defeated Minnesota-Morris, 106-31, on Dec. 14 in their most recent action. SERIES -- AUGIE-USD -- On Saturday, South Dakota and Augustana will meet for the 49th time with the Vikings holding a 27-21 series lead. Last year, the Vikings defeated the Coyotes, 75-69, in Sioux Falls and 82-70 in Vermillion. Augustana has won 12 in a row since the Coyotes' 73-70 win over the Vikings in 1994-95. The Coyotes won both games in the series in 1994-95, also winning 88-85 in Sioux Falls. SDSU-USD: South Dakota State leads the series, 40-19, including 21 straight wins over South Dakota. SDSU won the first 14 games between the two schools with the Coyotes winning 15 of the next 16. South Dakota last won 69-63 in 1991 at the DakotaDome. KNOCKING DOWN THREES: Junior forward Heather Nelson and sophomore guard Krista Orsack are having a shootout for the number three spot on South Dakota's all-time three-point made shot list. Orsack has 91 three-point field goals and is third all-time while Nelson has 89 for fourth place all-time. They trail Shelby Petersen Mayer (1990-94), 271; and Anne Knudtson (1994-98), 131. Nelson has made 10 of 40 three-point shots, and Orsack, the NCC leader in made 3-point field goals with 3.0 per game, has hit 30 of 73 for 41.1 percent in 2001-02. Speaking of threes, junior forward Julia Frie is on a tear. After missing her first three three-point field goals of the season, Frie, who leads the NCC in 3-point FG percentage, has now hit 13 of her last 19 attempts for 68.4 percent. Overall she is 13 of 22 for 59.1

In addition, sophomore forward Mandy Koupal leads the NCC in double doubles (points and rebounds) with six and has the most free throw attempts in a single game (14 vs. Minnesota State-Mankato (Dec. 7). Augustana has defeated Concordia-St. Paul, 64-46; Rollins, 76-53; Eckerd, 55-49; Western State, 83-51; North Dakota State, 66-63; North Dakota, 72-65 (OT); and Minnesota-Morris, 105-36. They have lost to Northern State, 72-54; Southwest State, 75-67; and Dakota Wesleyan, 60-51. In terms of scoring, the Vikings outscore opponents, 69.3 to 57.0, or a scoring margin advantage of 12.3. They have outscored opponents, 332 to 284 in the first half, 344 to 276 in the second half, and 17-10 in overtime for a total advantage of 693 to 570. AUGUSTANA HEAD COACH DAVE KRAUTH: In his 13th season as the Vikings' head coach, Krauth has a 251-100 record, which are the most wins ever by a basketball coach at Augustana. He became the Vikings' all-time career wins leader during the 1996-97 season. While at Augustana, the Vikings have appeared in seven NCAA Division II region tournaments. Krauth was named NCC Coach of the Year in 1990, and the South Dakota Sportswriters' College Coach of the Year in 1994. Krauth posted a 347-143 record at Tri-Valley High School in South Dakota and Roosevelt in Des Moines, Iowa. Eight of his high school teams qualified for the state tournament. Krauth graduated from the University of Sioux Falls in 1974. He received his master's degree from South Dakota State University in 1983. Assistant coach Travis Traphagen begins his first year at Augustana. A native of Groton, S.D., he graduated from Black Hills State where he was all-SDIC twice. He served two years as an assistant women's basketball coach at Wayne State.

ABOUT SDSU: The Jackrabbits have opened the season 11-2, including a 6-1 record at home, 2-1 on the road and 3-0 on a neutral floor. They were 10-1 in nonconference play, including 5-0 at home, 2-1 on the road, 3-0 on a neutral floor. SDSU is 1-1 in the NCC with both games at home. The Jacks have defeated Fort Valley State, 75-56; Columbus State, 94-80; Southern Indiana, 106-104 (OT); Minnesota-Crookston, 109-78; Bemidji State, 89-52; Winona State, 107-90; Minnesota-Duluth, 67-52; Northern State, 89-57; North Dakota State, 72-59; Sioux Falls, 88-56; and Minnesota-Morris, 106-31. The Jacks have lost to Concordia-St. Paul, 79-77; and North Dakota, 82-70. SDSU has outscored opponents, 88.4 to 67.4 per game, or a 21.0 margin. ON SDSU HEAD COACH AARON JOHNSTON: In his second season at SDSU, Johnston has a 30-16 overall record, including a 14-12 mark in the NCC. He took over head coaching duties at SDSU late in the 1999-00 season, leading the Jacks to a 4-2 record (all NCC games). Johnston led SDSU to a 15-12 record, 9-9 in the NCC (5th) in 2000-01. The Pine Island, Minn., native succeeded Nancy Neiber, who was promoted to senior women's administrator after 16 years as SDSU's head coach in 1999-00. Johnston was a graduate assistant for the Jacks' men's team for two years and previously served as an assistant coach for two seasons at the North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, N.D. He earned his bachelor's degree from Gustavus Adolphus in 1996 where he was also a student assistant. Laurie Melm, who is in her second season at SDSU, assists him. Melm of Rapid City, played at Augustana, earning all-NCC and academic all-NCC honors in 1997.

SOUTH DAKOTA PLAYER PROFILES:

MANDY KOUPAL: A sophomore forward from Wagner, S.D., Koupal has scored in double figures all 10 games to open her career at South Dakota. Koupal is averaging 26.9 minutes, 19.0 points (third in the NCC) and a NCC-leading 9.7 rebounds per game. She has hit 69 of 139 field goals for 49.6 percent and four of 23 three-point baskets for 17.4 percent. She is 48 of 55 for 87.3 percent from the free throw line. She already has six double-doubles (points and rebounds) which leads the NCC. She has scored 20 points five times (24, 25, 22, 30, 23). Koupal had a season high of 15 rebounds vs. St. Cloud State on Dec. 7 and a career high of 30 points vs. Minnesota-State on Dec. 8.

KRISTA ORSACK: Six times this season, Orsack (Sioux Falls, S.D.) has scored in double figures, including a season and career high 27 points vs. St. Cloud State on Dec. 7. She has scored in double figures in four of the past five games. Orsack, who has hit 22 three-point shots in her past five games, has a season high of seven three-point shots (vs. St. Cloud State, Dec. 8) and hit six of nine three-pointers in the 90-43 win over St. Mary on Dec. 16. Orsack, who leads the NCC in made three-point field goals with 30, is averaging 12.3 points, 2.8 rebounds and 32 minutes of action per game. She has made 41 of 99 field goals for 41.4 percent and she made 30 of 73 three-point field goals for 41.1 percent. She is 11 of 14 (78.6 percent) from the free throw line.

ERIN CASE: A freshman guard from Sioux Falls (Roosevelt), Case is averaging 4.1 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. She has hit 16 of 40 field goals for 40 percent and five of 11 three-point field goals for 45.5 percent. She is four of seven from the free throw line for 57.1 percent. She scored a season and career high of 14 points (six of eight from the field - two of three from the three-point line) and three steals in the Coyotes' 85-30 win over Minnesota-Morris on Dec. 15. She has a season high of four rebounds (DWU). She is averaging 19 minutes per game.

DAWN SUDBECK: A sophomore guard from Dimock, S.D. (Parkston High), Sudbeck is averaging 4.4 points and 1.2 rebounds per game. She has made 13 of 49 field goals for 26.9 percent and seven of 26 three-point field goals for 25 percent. Sudbeck is seven of eight from the free throw line for 87.5 percent. She set a season and career high with 12 points in the 82-53 win over Simpson on Dec. 21. This season she has set season highs in rebounds (4) and assists (3) against Wayne State on Nov. 16. She is averaging 15.1 minutes per game.

JULIA FRIE: A junior forward from Byron, Minn., Frie is averaging 10.1 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. Frie has made 35 of 77 field goals for 45.5 percent and she is leading the NCC in three-point field goal percentage, converting 13 of 22 for 62 percent from the three-point line. She has made 13 of her last 19 three-point field goals. She has converted 18 of 24 free throws for 75 percent. She has a season high of 15 points vs. the College of St. Mary on Dec. 16 at the DakotaDome. Her season high of rebounds is eight vs. Minnesota-Morris on Dec. 15. She is averaging 26.2 minutes per game. Frie has six double figure scoring games, including five in a row. She scored a career high of 31 points vs. Concordia on Nov. 20, 1999 and grabbed a career high of 12 rebounds vs. Central Oklahoma on Nov. 24, 2000. Frie has started 61 of 64 games at South Dakota, and she is averaging 12.7 points during her career.

STACY SCHOOLEY: A sophomore guard/forward from Watertown, S.D., Schooley is averaging 3.6 points, 2.7 assists, and 3.7 rebounds per game. She has hit 15 of 35 field goals for 42.9 percent and one of eight of her three-point field goal attempts. She is five of 11 from the free throw line for 45.5 percent. Schooley has a season high of eight points and six rebounds vs. Minnesota State-Mankato on Dec. 8. She is averaging 23.3 minutes per game.

HEATHER NELSON: A junior forward from Yankton, S.D., Nelson is averaging 9.2 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. She has made 32 of 98 field goals for 32.7 percent and 10 of 40 three-point field goals for 25 percent. She is 18 of 25 from the free throw line for 72 percent. Nelson has scored in double figures five times, including the last three games. She has scored 15 points vs. Wayne State (Nov. 16), 18 points and nine rebounds vs. DWU (Nov. 20), 13 points vs. St. Mary (Dec. 16), 10 points vs. Minnesota-Morris (Dec. 15), and 15 points vs. Simpson College (Dec. 21). She is averaging 24.8 minutes a contest. Nelson has a career high of 26 points in which she accomplished twice in her freshman season. She had 26 points vs. Northern Colorado on Jan. 8, 2000 and Wayne State on Dec. 18, 1999. Her career high in rebounds is 11 vs. St. Cloud on Jan. 28, 2001. For her career, she averages 10.6 points per game (63 games). She has started 30 games, including eight of 10 this year, at South Dakota.

AMANDA IVERSON: A junior forward from Vermillion, S.D., Iverson is averaging 5.8 points and 5.3 rebounds per contest. She has hit 22 of 59 field goals for 37.3 percent and missed her only three-point field goal attempt. She is 14 of 23 from the free throw line for 60.9 percent. She has a season high of 16 points and eight rebounds vs. Western State. She also had eight rebounds vs. Southwest State and Wayne State. She is averaging 16.5 minutes per game. She has two double figure scoring games.

ALISSA KORONKIEWICZ: A senior forward from Peshtigo, Wisc., Koronkiewicz serves as the team captain for the Coyotes. She is averaging 3.2 points and 3.8 rebounds per contest. Averaging 17.2 minutes per game, she has made seven of 22 field goals for 31.8 percent and 18 of 23 free throws for 78.3 percent. She has a season high of seven points and eight rebounds vs. Minnesota-Morris (Dec. 15) and she also had eight rebounds vs. DWU (Nov. 20).

TRACY MAGNUSON: A junior forward from Richfield, Minn., Magnuson is averaging 1.5 points and 1.0 rebounds per game this season. She has a high of four points vs. the College of St. Mary on Dec. 16 and a high of three rebounds vs. Minnesota-Morris on Dec. 15. She averages 4.0 minutes per game.
