VERMILLION, S.D. - Kristin Hanson of Okoboji High (Iowa) and Phil Rocha of Bellevue West (Neb.) were named the Most Valuable Athletes of the Class "A" section of the Dan Lennon Relays on Monday, March 26 at the DakotaDome. The Class "B" section of the meet will be held from noon to 9 a.m. on Tuesday, March 27. More than 1,300 participants from four states competed at the Dan Lennon Invitational, hosted by South Dakota track and field team.

Kristin Hanson won both the 800 meter run and 1,600-meter run on Monday. She broke the Dan Lennon record with a time of 2:18.80 (old record, Denise Koziol, Norfolk, Neb, 2:22.32, 1994). Rocha won the 1,600-meter run in 4:31.86 and ran on Bellevue West's winning 1,600-meter sprint medley (3:43.73). The girls results are first, followed by the boys results.

Merrigan, a longtime public address announcer for South Dakota Track and Field, was presented the Dan Lennon Award during the afternoon session of the meet. He started announcing track and field when USD moved into the DakotaDome facility in 1979 and has announced at all the North Central Conference meets held at the Dome, two outdoor NCC meets and the NCAA Division II meets held in the Dome. He started announcing the Sioux City Relays, Howard Wood Dakota Relays and the South Dakota State High School meet in 1995. A Vermillion native, he graduated from Vermillion High School in 1974 and attended USD from 1974-75. He has two children, Sarah, 15, and Jordan, 11.
