VERMILLION, S.D. (September 30, 2001) -- The University of
South Dakota women's soccer team (5-4, 2-2 NCC) dropped a tightly played 2-1
decision to Northern Colorado (8-4, 3-1 NCC), Sunday, September 30, at the
USD Soccer Field. Northern Colorado jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first
period, on a goal by Kiha Thomas (8:23). Later, the Bears got a break when a
deflected corner kick went into South Dakota's goal at 29:51.
Freshman Laura Hallauer (Aurora, Colo.) scored South Dakota's only
goal when her foul kick hit the right post and went into the net at 63:28.
The score cut the deficit to 2-1. Both teams had opportunities to score in
the final minutes but shots were just wide or high of the goal. South
Dakota freshman goalkeeper Cassie Walling (Omaha, Neb.) faced 22 shots,
collected eight saves and allowed two goals. Sophomore Lindsey Sturm (Sioux
Falls, S.D.) had four shots for the Coyotes.
Next, the Coyotes begin a lengthy October road trip. They will
travel to Grand Forks, N.D., to face North Dakota at noon on Saturday,
October 6. They also play North Dakota State at 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 7
in Fargo, N.D.
