Former South Dakota QB Jim Duggan Joins SD Football Staff

Jim Duggan of Council Bluffs, Iowa, has been named a graduate assistant football coach with the South Dakota football program, according to an announcement today by South Dakota football coach John Austin. Duggan, a former South Dakota quarterback, has served as head football coach or co-head football coach at Saint Albert High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa since 1997. During his tenure, Saint Alberts has compiled a 46-8 record and qualified all five years for the playoffs. Duggan has also served as the offensive coordinator during that time span.

During the 1997-98 seasons, he was co-head football coach for Saint Albert High School. In those two seasons, the schools had a 18-3 record and twice reached the Iowa State Playoffs. From 1999-2001 he was head football coach with his team recording a 28-5 record. His 2000 squad reached the state semifinals in Iowa.

Twice, he was the Coach of the Year in Class 1A District 9 and 2A Coach of the Year in District 10 in 1999. During 1999, when Saint Alberts reached the quarterfinals in the state playoffs, he was the Iowa Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year in the Southwest Iowa Class A - 1A-2A.

Duggan also served as an assistant football coach from 1991-96 at Saint Alberts and he was an assistant at Thomas Jefferson High School in Council Bluffs for one season (1985).

A member of the South Dakota football team from 1980-84, he served as team captain in 1984. Duggan holds the South Dakota single season game record for most consecutive passes completed with 15 vs. NDSU in 1984. He was voted the South Dakota Co-Athlete of the Year in 1985. While at South Dakota, Duggan had the third best season for total offense (1,886 yards, 1984) in school history.

At South Dakota, Duggan completed 260 of 437 passes for 3,450 yards and eight touchdowns. When he left South Dakota, he had the two best passing seasons of all-time. In 1983, he completed 137 of 244 passes for 1,727 yards and five touchdowns in leading South Dakota to a 7-4 record and 6-3 in the NCC. In 1984, he completed 115 of 193 passes for 1,620 yards and two touchdowns as South Dakota had a 8-3 record and 7-2 mark in the NCC.
