USD Women's BB Goes to 2-0 With 83-69 Win Over Wayne State on Saturday in Wayne St. Tip-Off Classic

WAYNE, NEB. -- Paced by Mandy Koupal's 25 points, The University of South Dakota Women's Basketball Team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 83-69 win over Wayne State (1-1) on Saturday at the Wayne State Tip-Off Classic.

South Dakota hit a season-high 51 percent from the field (29-57) in the win. USD made nine of 24 shots from the three-point arc and 16 of 24 free throws. The Coyotes won the rebound battle, 35-31.

Koupal (Wagner, S.D.), who had a double double (21 points, 12 rebounds) in the season opening win over Northern State on Friday night, just missed her second double double. She hit seven of nine field goals and 10-12 free throws while handing out two assists and blocking one shot.

Junior point guard Stacy Schooley (Watertown, S.D.) also had a solid game with 13 points and a career high eight assists. She also had two rebounds and three steals. Freshman guard Renae Luecke (Sioux Falls, S.D.) hit seven of 11 field goals, including four of seven three-point field goals for 18 points. She also had six rebounds, four assists and three steals on the night. Senior forward Heather Nelson (Yankton, S.D.) added nine points and five rebounds. She also had two blocked shots and two steals. Dawn Sudbeck (Dimock, S.D.) scored seven points and recorded three assists.

Wayne State was led by guard Dodie Martin, who had 20 points, while center Karen Hochstein had 12 points and seven rebounds. The Wildcats hit 25 of 56 field goals, including nine of 19 from the three-point arc. They were 10 of 12 from the free throw line.

The first half was a back and forth contest. Wayne State took a 27-21 lead at the 7:33 mark before the Coyotes answered with a 20-7 run to end the half and lead 41-34.

The Wildcats fought back to within 43-42 when Kari Belak hit a jumper at the 16:18 mark. Then, the Coyotes went on an 11-3 run to grab a 54-45 lead at the 13:03 mark of the second half.

The Wildcats again rallied, moving within 58-53 when Martin hit a jumper at the 10:07 mark. The Coyotes built the lead to 63-53 with 8:18 to play on a jumper by Nelson. Once again, Wayne State came back, pulling with 69-63 with 5:10 to play on two foul shots by Hochstein. The Coyotes answered and took a 76-65 lead with 2:45 to play on a jumper by Koupal. Schooley's foul shot with 1:27 to play gave the Coyotes a 79-67 lead.

South Dakota will travel to the Nebraska-Omaha Classic on Nov. 29-30 in Omaha, Neb. They play Emporia State at 1 p.m. on Nov. 29 and Southern Colorado at 1 p.m. on Nov. 30. They return home for their home opener on Dec. 3 vs. the College of St. Mary at 7 p.m. in the DakotaDome.
