USD Women's BB Team Moves to 8-0 With 80-48 Win over Morningside on Sunday Night at the DakotaDome

VERMILLION, S.D. -- Junior forward Mandy Koupal had 24 points and 23 rebounds to lead South Dakota (8-0) to a 80-48 nonconference win over Morningside on Sunday night at the DakotaDome.

Koupal (Wagner, S.D.) hit nine of 12 field goals, including two of three from the three-point arc, as well as four of five free throws to lead USD to its 17th straight home win. USD has won 13 straight nonconference games. Koupal's 23 rebounds set a single game DakotaDome record and is the seventh best performance in school history. Koupal also recorded her fourth double double of the season.

Junior guard Erin Bourne (Mankato, Minn.) had 21 points, including four of eight from three-point land. Freshman guard Renae Luecke (Sioux Falls, S.D.) had 17 points, including seven of nine from the floor. Senior forward Julia Frie (Byron, Minn.) had nine rebounds and four assists. Junior guard Dawn Sudbeck (Dimock, S.D.) had six assists and two steals while junior guard Stacey Schooley added four points, four steals, two assists and two blocked shots. Overall, South Dakota hit 31 of 59 field goals for 52.5 percent. USD was 12 of 28 from three-point range for 42.98 percent. The Coyotes hit six of nine free throws and won the rebound battle, 50-36.

Morningside (6-7) was led by Kate Lokken, who had 14 points and 13 rebounds. Ashley Latham and Brittany Carper both scored eight points. The Mustangs made 15 of 70 field goals for 21.4 percent. They hit just three of 26 three-point field goals. However, the Mustangs made 15 of 16 free throws for 93.8 percent.

Bourne scored the Coyotes' first seven points and scored 15 points as USD grabbed the halftime lead at 44-25. After Bourne's early shooting display, the Coyotes rode the play of Koupal, who had 19 points and 14 rebounds in the opening half. The Coyotes hit 17 of 30 field goals, including five of 13 from the three point line during the opening 20 minutes. They were also five of seven from the free throw line. In the first half, Morningside was led by Kate Lokken with eight points and six rebounds. The Mustangs hit seven of 32 field goals for 21.9 percent. They made just one of 12 three-pointers and hit all 10 of their free throws.

USD had a 14-0 run to go from an 8-7 deficit to a 21-8 lead at the 12:04 mark. Later Stacy Schooley had a steal and layup for a 29-17 lead at the 8:55 mark. Two free throws by Koupal gave the Coyotes a 42-23 lead with 1:55 to play.

The second half was similar to the first half as USD maintained a 20-point lead or better throughout. A three-pointer by Koupal gave USD a 52-27 lead with 14:29 to play. Morningside cut the lead to 56-38 when Mandy Meersch made a three-point basket. A steal by Schooley and three-pointer by Luecke pushed the lead to 65-38 with 7:46 to play. Schooley's lay-up with 2:29 to play gave USD an 80-45 lead, their largest margin of the game.

South Dakota will host Mount Marty on Wednesday at the DakotaDome. Gametime is set for 7 p.m.
