USD'S Markowski Named Men's BB Assistant at Bowling Green

VERMILLION, S.D. - South Dakota men's basketball assistant coach Andy Markowski has accepted a fulltime assistant men's basketball coaching position at NCAA Division I Bowling Green State. Markowski's resignation from South Dakota is effective June 30. He begins his new duties on July 1.

Markowski will join head coach Dan Dakich's coaching staff at Bowling Green State. Dakich, who has an overall record of 89-57 (61 percent), led the Falcons to a 24-9 (12-6 in the MAC) mark a year ago. It was the Falcon's second 20-win season in three seasons with Dakich at the controls. The Falcons were selected to participate in the NIT for the 13th time. In 2001-02 Bowling Green played in the MAC Tournament championship game for the first time since 1983. "This is a great opportunity. I look forward to working with Coach Dakich and the Bowling Green State program," said Markowski, who just completed his first year as the top assistant coach for Dave Boots at South Dakota. "I am also very appreciative of the opportunity provided to me by coach Boots and the Coyote basketball program." South Dakota will immediately begin a national search to replace Markowski. Markowski spent three years at NCAA Division II South Dakota, including two years as a graduate assistant for Boots, the five-time North Central Conference Coach of the Year. Markowski has been part of a basketball program that has won three of the past four NCC men's titles. During his time as an assistant for Coach Boots, the Coyotes have an 86-26 record, including a 52-20 mark in the NCC. A two-year captain and three-time academic all-Big 12 Conference forward for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Markowski participated in the NCAA Tournament with Nebraska in 1998. He ranks among the top-10 players all-time at Nebraska in games played with 124, while finishing his career with 603 points, 568 rebounds, 147 assists, 115 steals and 43 blocked shots. He was a starter for the Huskers in both 1997-98 and 1998-99, helping Nebraska to an NCAA Tournament bid in 1998. He also played for Nebraska's NIT team in 1996. Markowski was a first-team all state performer at Ord (Neb.) High School where he set records in eight categories. He is married to Jaime (Gebhardt) Markowski.
