VERMILLION, S.D. (September 1, 2002) - The University of South Dakota women's soccer team (0-2) lost its second straight match in the 2002 season as Missouri Southern defeated South Dakota, 3-2, on Sunday, Sept. 1, in Warrensburg, Mo., at the Central Missouri State Tournament. Yesterday, the Coyotes lost to Central Missouri State, 2-1, in double overtime.
In the match against Missouri Southern, junior Lindsey Sturm (Sioux Falls, S.D.) scored the opening goal of the match at 14:25 off an assist by senior Jamie Strong (McCook Lake, S.D.). Missouri Southern scored at 35:00 and 41:30 to take the lead, but freshman Beth Schuster (Omaha, Neb.) scored unassisted at 58:30 to tie the match. Missouri Southern scored the winning goal at 65:00 on a shot from the right side.
Sturm finished the match with one shot on goal and one goal and Schuster recorded two shots on goal and one goal. Junior Teri Atkinson (Springfield, Ill.), junior Ali Magel (Sioux City, Iowa), and sophomore Laura Hallauer (Aurora, Colo.) all had one shot on goal. As a team, South Dakota had seven shots, six shots on goal, two goals and one assist. Freshman Candice Martinez (Aurora, Colo.) played the full 90:00 at goal keeper, recording four saves and allowing three goals. Missouri Southern had 14 shots, seven shots on goal, three goals and three assists.
South Dakota opens at home on Wednesday, Sept. 4 with a match against Dordt at 4 p.m. They will also be at home on Saturday, Sept. 7 when they face Emporia State at 3 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 8 when they host Rockhurst at 3 p.m.
Saturday's Game
Central Missouri State scored a goal in the final minute of regulation play to push a 1-1 match into overtime before defeating South Dakota, 2-1, in double overtime on Saturday, Aug. 31, in Warrensburg, Mo. Schuster scored for South Dakota at 27:15 off an assist by freshman Lauren Merritt (Springfield, Ill.). Central Missouri State tied the match at 89:00, and won the match off a goal at 102:30. Schuster finished with three shots, one shot on goal and one goal. Strong, Magel, Hallauer and junior Emily Gunter (Rapid City, S.D.) each had shots on goal. Martinez played 102:30 at keeper with four saves and two goals allowed. As a team, South Dakota had 16 shots, six shots on goal, one goal and one assist. Central Missouri State had 18 shots, six shots on goal, two goals and three assists. Central Missouri State's keeper, Stephanie Reyes, played 102:30 and had five saves and one goal allowed.
