OMAHA, NEB. - The 14th-ranked South Dakota women's basketball team (15-2, 5-1) survived its worst shooting performance of the season Thursday night, coming away with a 67-55 win over Nebraska-Omaha in front of 900 fans at Sapp Fieldhouse in North Central Conference play.
The Coyotes managed to hit just 22-of-72 attempts from the field for a season-low 30.6 percent and USD's 67 points was the third-lowest point total of the season. South Dakota countered its offensive woes by forcing UNO into 20 turnovers and holding the Mavericks to 33.3 percent shooting in the second half (10-of-30).
Leading the way for the Coyotes was junior Mandy Koupal, who scored 29 points and pulled down 16 rebounds. She recorded her league-leading ninth double double and second in a row. Over her last three games, the Wagner, S.D., native is averaging 33.3 points and 12.3 rebounds per game.
USD trailed by just one at 27-26 after the first half of play, despite shooting a dismal 22.7 percent from the field (10-of-44). The Mavericks hit on 44.0 percent of their first half shots (11-of-25), but were unable to build a lead because of 12 first-half turnovers.
In the second half, UNO took its biggest lead of the game at 40-35 with 14:49 to play, but USD battled back to tie the game up at 47-47 with a 12-7 spurt over the next seven minutes. Over the final 7:51, the Coyotes outscored the Mavs 20-8, with 11 points coming from Koupal, to earn the victory.
From the field in the second half, the Coyotes improved by shooting 42.9 percent from the floor (12-of-28), while holding Nebraska-Omaha to 33.3 percent (10-of-30).
Also scoring in double figures for South Dakota was freshman Renae Luecke (Sioux Falls, S.D.) with 13 points and senior Heather Nelson (Yankton, S.D.) with 11 points. Junior guard Stacy Schooley (Watertown, S.D.) tied a career high in rebounds with 10 boards.
Leading UNO in scoring was guard Sara Peterson with 16 points. Senior center Tanya Hammes posted a double-double for the Mavs with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
After an off weekend this week, USD returns to action Friday, Jan. 31, on the road against North Dakota State. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
