SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Senior
Becky Olson of the South Dakota volleyball team was one of four players to be tabbed North Central Conference Most Valuable Player, according to announcement by the league office Monday.
Along with Olson, Kari Holmgren of North Dakota State, Sara Larson of Augustana and Nichole Rose of Minnesota State shared MVP laurels.
Junior outside hitter Lindsey Soukup joined Olson on the 17-member All-NCC team. In addition, junior setter Liz Selzer earned honorable mention all-conference honors.
Olson (Norfolk, Neb.), who was named All-NCC as a junior and earned honorable mention laurels as a sophomore, becomes the first player in school history to be awarded first-team honors twice.
This season, Olson ranked second in the NCC with 4.10 kills per game and on Oct. 24 became the school's all-time kill leader (1,450). In addition, she is the school's all-time attack attempts leader (3,981), ranks second in career digs (1,305), second in kills per game for a career (3.27), fourth in career service aces (130) and fifth in career blocks (261).
Soukup, a native of Lincoln, Neb., becomes just the sixth player in school history to earn first-team all-conference honors after averaging 3.26 kills and 3.80 digs per game this season. In conference play, Soukup upped her numbers to 3.40 kills and 4.34 kills per game.
"Becky established herself as one of the premier players in our league this season," Head Coach Brian Lamppa said. "Lindsey has proved she is one of the top players in our conference. Becky, Lindsey, along with Liz, each are very deserving of these awards."
Selzer, a native of Papillion, Neb., averaged 11.89 assists per game this season, which ranked third in the NCC.
South Dakota finished the 2003 season with an 18-10 overall record and an 8-6 mark in the conference. The 18 wins tied a school single-season record, while the eight NCC wins and fourth-place tie in the conference standings set new school records.
