No. 3 South Dakota Women's BB Team Rolls Past William Penn, 95-41; Koupal Selected MVP Of Classic

OMAHA, NEB. -- Led by a school-record nine three pointers from senior guard Erin Bourne, the No. 3 South Dakota women's basketball team (6-1) rolled to a 95-41 win over William Penn (3-8) at the Nebraska-Omaha Women's Basketball Classic on Saturday.

Bourne (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) had a career-high 29 points, making 9-of-13 three pointers which broke the school record of Shelby Peterson, who twice made eight three-pointers in the 1991-92 season (vs. Peru State, St. Cloud State). Overall, Bourne made 10-of-15 field goals and contributed three rebounds and two assists.

South Dakota freshman guard Jenni Flynn (South Sioux City, Neb.) also had her best game as a Coyote. She had a career-high 19 points, hitting 7-of-14 field goals, including 3-of-9 from three-point range. In addition, Flynn had seven rebounds, two assists and a steal. Sophomore Meghan Woster (Sioux Falls, S.D.) had nine points, eight assists and five rebounds while redshirt freshman Vanessa Yanez (Wagner, S.D.) contributed seven points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

In limited minutes, USD All-American Mandy Koupal, who was named the UNO Basketball Classic MVP, had six points and seven rebounds. Koupal is just eight points from taking over third place (Shelby Peterson, 1487, 1990-94) on the career scoring list at South Dakota.

With the win, USD was 2-0 at the UNO Basketball Classic. The Coyotes defeated Minnesota State Moorhead, 56-55, on Nov. 28. Both Bourne and Koupal were named to the UNO Basketball Classic All-Tourney Squad.

South Dakota jumped to a 13-2 lead (16:07) in the opening minutes as Bourne knocked down a couple of three-point field goals. After William Penn closed the gap to 13-9, the Coyotes took control. USD went on a 14-0 run to increase its lead to 27-9 at the 7:01 mark of the first half.

A lay-up by Jodi Schroeder (Tulare, S.D.) gave USD a 36-16 lead at the 3:28 mark. Then, Bourne hit her sixth three-pointer (:29) and Stacy Schooley (Watertown, S.D.) made a jumper as the half closed and South Dakota led 49-22.

The second half went much like the first half as South Dakota opened on a 13-0 run, grabbing a 62-22 lead after Flynn hit a three-pointer with 16:58 to play. Later, Flynn made a lay-up as USD increased its lead to 85-35 with 6:27 to play. Bourne's record-breaking three-pointer gave USD its biggest lead at 92-37 lead with 3:27 to play.

A key factor in the game was USD's ability to convert turnovers into points. The Coyotes held a 31-0 margin in points off turnovers. For the game, USD had just four turnovers while William Penn committed 16. South Dakota also won the rebound battle, 43-32.
