SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The fourth-ranked South Dakota (14-1) won its 13th game and shot a season-best 56 percent from the field as the Coyotes rolled to a 104-62 nonconference win over Chadron State (0-8) on Saturday at the Augustana Basketball Classic.
Four Coyotes reached double figures, led by All-American Mandy Koupal (Wagner, S.D.), who had 28 points, seven rebounds and four assists. During another standout performance, Koupal passed another career milestone by going past the 2,000 point mark. The senior, who hit 11-of-18 field goals on the night, now has 2,021 collegiate points, including 1,667 at South Dakota.
Redshirt freshman Vanessa Yanez (Wagner, S.D.) had a career-high with 22 points while freshman Jenni Flynn (South Sioux City, Neb.) added 19 points, including 5-of-7 three pointers. Junior Kayla Jacobs (Watertown, S.D.) had 14 points, including three, three-pointers.
The Coyotes, playing without the services of senior point guard Stacy Schooley, received a boost from senior guard Dawn Sudbeck (Dimock, S.D.), who had five points and four assists. All nine USD players that got into the game scored.
South Dakota recorded a season-high 104 points and was the highest output by a USD team since a 105-41 win over Minnesota-Morris during the 2002-03 season.
Overall, South Dakota hit a torrid 36-of-64 field goals for 56 percent, including 14-of-22 three point field goals for 64 percent. The Coyotes, which made 14 three-pointers for the third time this season, hit 18-of-20 free throws for 90 percent. USD hit 51.2 percent in the opening half then made 18-of-29 shots for 62 percent in the second stanza.
South Dakota led 3-2 before going on a 10-0 run and were never challenged. USD led 52-26 at halftime. Chadron State, which received 15 points from Erin Cherry, cut the lead to 63-41 with 14:24 to play in the second half but that was as close as the Eagles would get on the day.
USD outscored Chadron State, 41-21 during the remainder of the game to grab the win. USD's largest lead was a 104-60 lead in the closing seconds after Erica Schroeder (Miller, S.D.) knocked home a three-point field goal.
