South Dakota Women's BB Team Takes 87-53 Win Over Mount Marty

VERMILLION, S.D. -- The fourth-ranked South Dakota Coyotes (15-1), paced by All-American Mandy Koupal's 31 points and 15 rebounds, won its 14th straight game with a 87-53 win over Mount Marty (7-8) on Saturday at the DakotaDome.

Koupal, a senior from Wagner, S.D., hit 12-of-24 field goals and 6-of-7 from the free throw line while also knocking down a three-point field goals. The senior, who now has 1,698 career points, had her eighth double double of the season and 44th of her career at USD.

Redshirt freshman Vanessa Yanez (Wagner, S.D.) added 13 points while senior guard Erin Bourne (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) added 10 points. The 14 consecutive wins is the most since the 1983-84 team won 17 in-a-row. Sophomore Meghan Woster (Sioux Falls, S.D.) had eight points, seven assists and five rebounds. Stacy Schooley (Watertown, S.D.) had eight points, seven assists, and four steals while freshman Jenni Flynn (South Sioux City, Neb.) had eight points and four steals.

South Dakota jumped to a 19-10 lead on a three-pointer by Yanez with 11:45 to play. USD maintained both offensive and defensive pressure, outscoring Mount Marty, 28-17, over the rest of the half to grab a 47-27 halftime advantage. Koupal had 22 points and 10 rebounds in the first half.

A lay-up by Koupal provided USD with a 68-32 lead at the 14:08 mark. Another three-pointer by Yanez at the 8:08 mark gave USD its largest lead of the game at 43 points, 80-47.

USD, which had 12 steals and 23 assists, hit 33-of-70 field goals for 47.1 percent, including 11-of-24 for 45.8 percent from three-point range. Yanez's three, three-pointers led USD. The Coyotes also hit 10-of-12 free throws for 83.3 percent.

Mount Marty, which outrebounded USD, 41 to 34, was led by Jessica Krull with 14 points and seven rebounds. Erin Case added 10 points. The Lancers made 34.6 percent from the field (8-of-26), including 41.7 percent from three-point range (5-of-12) and they were 12-of-15 from the charity stripe for 80 percent.

Next weekend, Jan. 9-10, South Dakota will open its North Central Conference season on the road. USD plays at Frost Arena in Brookings, S.D., at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 9, before playing Augustana on Saturday, Jan. 10, at 8 p.m., at the Elmen Center in Sioux Falls.
