MARSHALL, MINN. -- The third-ranked South Dakota men's basketball team improved to 6-0 with a 80-71 win over Southwest Minnesota State Saturday night at the Southwest Minnesota State Classic in Marshall, Minn.

Junior guards Josh Mueller and Vincent McGill led the way for the Coyotes scoring 53 of USD's 80 points, as each knocked down six three-pointers. McGill, a native of Paterson, N.J., was named the Most Valuable Player of the classic after scoring had 25 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the floor against the Mustangs.

Mueller, a native of Hartford, S.D., was perfect from long distance (6-of-6), scoring a game-high 28 points and dishing out seven assists. Mueller joined McGill and sophomore forward Turner Trofholz on the all-classic team. Trofholz (Schuyler, Neb.) had 13 points and four rebounds.

The Coyotes held just a two-point advantage at the half, leading 34-32 after the first 20 minutes of play. USD pushed its lead to 10 points at 55-45 with 11:23 to play in the game, but a 12-5 run by Southwest Minnesota State brought the Mustangs to within three at 60-57 with 5:41 to go.

McGill responded for South Dakota with three treys in a 70-second span to push the Coyotes lead back to 10 and take control of the contest at 69-59 with 4:38 to go in the game.

For the game, USD shot 52.9 percent from the field (27-of-51), including connecting on 65.0 percent from the three-point line (13-of-20). The Coyotes were outrebounded, 33-27.

South Dakota returns to action next Saturday, Dec. 13, in Aberdeen, S.D., against Northern State starting at 8 p.m.
