Koupal's 32 Points Not Enough in 74-64 Loss at Augustana

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Despite a 32-point, 15-rebound performance from All-American Mandy Koupal, the fourth-ranked South Dakota women's basketball team (15-3, 0-2) dropped a 74-64 decision at Augustana (10-5, 2-0) Saturday night in front of 2,802 fans at the Elmen Center in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The loss marked the first time the Coyotes recorded back-to-back losses (99-83 setback at No. 7 South Dakota State Friday night) since the 2001-02 season, which ironically were losses at SDSU and Augie.

Koupal had one of her top performances of the season, scoring 22 of USD's 29 second-half points. The Wagner, S.D., native was 9-of-16 from the field and 12-of-16 from the foul line, while also recording three assists and three blocked shots.

For the game, the Coyotes shot a season-low 35.1 percent from the field (20-of-57), while Augustana was 22-of-49 from the floor (44.9 percent) and 10-of-21 from the three-point line (47.6 percent).

Early on in the first half, South Dakota took a 17-13 lead on a lay-up by senior forward Jodi Schroeder at the 10:52 mark. Augie took control of the contest over the next six minutes, holding the Coyotes scoreless on a 19-0 run to grab a 15-point 32-17 advantage with 4:39 on the clock.

Down 13 points at 36-23 with 3:46 to go in the half, South Dakota rebounded by outscoring the Vikings 12-4 to close out the opening stanza, narrowing the Augustana lead to five at 40-35.

The Vikings extended its lead back to 13 points early on in the second half thanks to a 9-0 run over a four-minute span to take a 54-41 lead. The Coyote again responded though, by outscoring Augustana 13-3 during the next five minutes to pull with in three at 57-54 with 8:51 to go.

A Koupal three-pointer with 6:52 to play again cut the Viking advantage to three, 61-58, but Augustana outscored USD 13-6 in the final minutes to go on to the win.

Junior Kayla Jacobs (Watertown, S.D.) had nine points for USD, while senior Erin Bourne (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) added eight points.

Augustana had four players in double figures, including 15 points from both Joanna Naumann and Erin Johnson. Katie Krauth had a solid all-around game for the Vikings with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

USD will look to get back on the winning track next week when it travels to Grand Forks, N.D., for a matchup with North Dakota on Friday, Jan. 16, starting at 6 p.m.
