South Dakota Women's Basketball Picks up 71-56 Win over York

VERMILLION, S.D. (Nov. 19, 2005)--The South Dakota women's basketball team (2-0) picked up a 71-56 victory over the York (Neb.) Panthers (5-3), behind three players in double figures at the DakotaDome Saturday afternoon.

Junior Jenni Flynn (South Sioux City, Neb.) and sophomore Ashley Bjorkman (Vermillion, S.D.) combined to make 10-of-20 three-pointers as both finished with 18 points to lead USD to its second-straight victory.

Senior Meghan Woster (Sioux Falls, S.D.) added 15 points on two baskets and 10 free throws, while leading the Coyotes with six rebounds.

The going was not easy for USD as they trailed for a five minute stretch in the first half, from the 13:31 mark to 8:17, when Bjorkman nailed a three on an assist from freshman Anne Doshier (Rapid City, S.D.).

The Coyotes proceeded to build a 12-point lead, 36-24, with 38 seconds remaining in the half on Bjorkman's third three-pointer of the period. York then added a three of its own to cut the halftime margin to 36-27.

In the second half, the Panthers cut USD's lead to three, 47-44, at the 9:00 mark, when Kandie Wood hit a three of her own. That was as close as the score would get.

For the game, USD shot 40.4% (19-of-47) from the field, including 45.2% (14-of-31) from three-point range. The Coyotes knocked down 19 of its 24 free throw attempts (79.2%).

The Panthers, who outrebounded USD 44-29, including 20 offensive, committed 24 turnovers and 25 personal fouls in the contest. The 24 turnovers led to 16 Coyote points.

As a team, York shot 30.4% (17-of-56) from the field and was 4-of-20 (20%) from three-point range. York did make 85.3% (18-of-21) of its free throws on the afternoon.

Ashley Wellman led York with 18 points, while Adrianna Martin notched a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds.

In its next action, USD will travel to Aberdeen, S.D., to take on Northern State on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. in the Barnett Center.
