VERMILLION, S.D. (Sept. 30, 2005)--The South Dakota women's soccer team (7-3, 1-2 NCC) surrendered three second-half goals and dropped a 3-1 decision to the seventh-ranked Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks (7-1, 3-0 NCC), in front of 304 in attendance at the USD Soccer Field today.
It was the Coyotes that got on the board first, when sophomore Taryn Ketter (Columbus, Neb.) put a penalty kick past UNO keeper Amy Price at the 11:26 mark of the first half to give USD a 1-0 lead.
The South Dakota lead held up the remainder of the first period until the 50th minute, when Rachel Waterhouse scored an unassisted goal at 49:44 to tie the match at 1-1.
The match remained tied until Ketter was whistled for a foul in the box, while performing a tackle at the 70:54 mark. On the ensuing penalty kick, the Maverick's Brandie Beale put her shot just to the right of USD's Keyton Wheelock's (Traverse City, Mich.) extended arms to record the game winner and give UNO a 2-1.
UNO tacked on an insurance goal at 78:49, when Amanda Iwansky scored, assisted by Tara Wegehaupt, following one of the Maverick's 11 corner kicks.
USD, who was limited to just two corner kicks in the match, outshot UNO, 5-3, in the first half, but the Mavericks recorded a 9-1 advantage in shots in the second period.
Despite there being a total of 26 fouls in the match, no cautions were issued.
In goal, Wheelock allowed all three goals and notched four saves over the 90 minutes, while Price gave up one goal and made one save for UNO.
USD will look to snap its two-match skid on Sunday, Oct. 2, when they travel to Marshall, Minn., to take on the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs at 1 p.m.
