GOLDEN, COLO. -- The South Dakota Women's Basketball Team improved to 2-0 with a 76-50 nonconference win over the Colorado School of Mines (0-3) on Wednesday night at the Volk Gymnasium in Golden, Colo.
Junior forward Ashley Robinette (South Sioux City, Neb.) led four players in double figures with 13 points. Robinette hit 4-of-6 shots from the field, including 3-of-5 from three point range. Robinette has now hit 8-of-12 three-point field goals this season for 66.7 percent.
Both junior guard Shannon Daly (Groton, S.D.) and junior forward Ashley Bjorkman (Vermillion, S.D.) had 12 points while Jenna Hoffman (Mitchell, S.D.) added 11 points. Daly also had five assists and three steals. Off the bench, Bjorkman hit 4-of-6 field goals and hit a pair of three-point baskets while also recording two steals in 18 minutes of action. Hoffman added four rebounds and three steals for the Coyotes, which recorded 14 steals as a team.
South Dakota hit 23-of-50 field goals for 46 percent, including 10-of-19 three point field goals for 52.6 percent. The Coyotes were 20-of-29 from the foul line for 69 percent.
The Colorado School of Mines was led by Iva Tomova with 13 points. The Orediggers hit 10-of-37 field goals for 27 percent, including just 1-of-8 from three-point rnage. CSM made 29-of-35 free throws for 82.9 percent. The Orediggers won the rebound battle by a 36-25 margin.
The Coyotes opened up a 13-0 lead at the 16:10 mark of the first half following a three-point field goal by Robinette. USD extended the lead to 16-2 at the 14:23 mark after Jenna Hoffman hit a three-point shot. The Coyotes continued their early game surge by building a 26-10 lead when Robinette hit another three-pointer at the 11:50 mark. Then, the Orediggers began cutting into the Coyote advantage. CSM outscored USD 12-2 to pull within 28-22 at the 7:15 mark. The Coyotes righted its ship and regained a 13-point lead at the 3:53 mark when Robinette knocked down a pair of free throws. USD led, 41-28, at the halftime break.
South Dakota quickly put the game away by outscoring CSM, 14-4, in the opening five minutes of play in the second half. USD took a 55-32 led at the 13:22 mark on a three-point shot by Robinette off an assist from Jeana Hoffman (Mitchell, S.D.). The Coyotes built its largest lead of the game at 28 points (71-43) at the 3:59 mark after Maggie Youngberg (Yankton, S.D.) knocked down a three-point field goal.
Key to the game was USD's ability to score off turnovers as the Coyotes owned a 25-5 advantage.
