Jeana Hoffman scored a career-high 24 points as the South Dakota Women's Basketball Team picked up a 67-66 win over 23rd-ranked Regis University on Friday at the Cougar Thanksgiving Basketball Classic at Lakewood, Colo. With the win, the Coyotes improved to 3-0 on the season while Regis fell to 1-2.
Shannon Daly's free throws with 43 seconds left in the game gave the Coyotes a 67-64 lead as USD withstood a last second rally by Regis to win its third straight nonconference game. Regis had two field goal attempts in the final 15 seconds in a bid for the win but the shots were off line.
Hoffman, a junior from Mitchell, S.D., hit 10-of-18 field goals and three-of-seven three-point field goals in her best game as a Coyote. She also had four rebounds. Ashley Bjorkman, a junior from Vermillion, S.D., added 13 points and three rebounds. Bridget Yoerger, a junior from Hinton, Iowa, also scored in double figures with 11 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Jenna Hoffman, a junior from Mitchell, S.D., finished with a game-high 12 rebounds and six rebounds.
Regis was led by All-America candidate Diana Lopez, who had 19 points, six rebounds and five steals. Paullina Tuell added 17 points while Breanne Burley scored 12 points.
South Dakota hit 21-of-53 field goals for 39.6 percent. The Coyotes made 5-of-19 three point field goals and 20-of-25 free throws for 80 percent. USD won the rebound battle, 39-32.
Regis hit 25-of-62 field goals for 40.3 percent while making just 4-of-12 three point field goals. They made 10-of-12 free throws.
Early on, Regis jumped to a 9-2 lead after a three-pointer by Lopez at the 15:24 mark. Then, the Coyotes took off on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 9-9 at the 12:21 mark. Jeana Hoffman had five points to key the run.
In what proved to be a game of small runs, it was Regis who again gained control of the game. Burley scored five points to key a 9-2 run over the next four minutes as Regis led, 19-11, at the 8:20 mark. A jumper by Jeana Hoffman pulled the Coyotes within 19-17 at the 6:04 mark. USD continued its surge with an 11-0 run over the final 5:25 to take a 28-22 halftime lead. In the final 6:04, USD outscored Regis, 17-3.
USD gained its largest lead of the game at 37-29 when Jeana Hoffman hit another three-point field goal early in the second half. Regis rallied with a 7-0 run to pull within 37-36 at the 14:39 mark.
Two free throws by Lopez tied the game at 42-42 with 12:31 to play in the game.
From that point, the game remained close the rest of the way. Jeana Hoffman's third three-pointer of the game provided USD with a 50-47 lead at the 10:57 mark.
Regis went on a 11-5 run to take a 58-55 lead at the 6:12 mark following a Lopez jumper. Regis maintained a 62-60 lead at the 5:02 mark when Tuell hit a jumper. Burley's jumper extended the lead by Regis to 64-60 at the 4:45 mark. Then, like the end of the first half, the Coyotes rallied with a run of their own, this time finishing on a 7-2 run to win the road game. First, Bjorkman hit a jumper at the 2:47 mark to tie the game at 64-64. Bjorkman added a pair of free throws for a 66-64 lead at the 1:43 mark. Then Shannon Daly (Groton, S.D.) hit a free throw as USD took a 67-64 lead with 43 seconds left in the game. Regis finally scored when Burley hit a jumper with 34 seconds to play in the game. A turnover by USD gave Regis possession with 15 seconds left to play. In a frantic finish, Regis tried two jump shots that were off line as USD held on for the win.
South Dakota will conclude its trip to Colorado with a game on Saturday against Colorado Christian at Lakewood, Colo.
