23rd-ranked South Dakota Women's Basketball Team Wins Ninth Straight with 90-46 Win over Chadron State

VERMILLION, S.D. -- Maggie Youngberg scored a career-high 15 points to lead the 23rd-ranked South Dakota Women's Basketball Team (13-1) to a 90-46 win over Chadron State (0-11) in nonconference action at the DakotaDome on Sunday, Dec. 31.

With the win, South Dakota won its ninth straight game to improve to 13-1 on the season. For the sixth straight game, USD held its opponents to 55 points or less. In addition, the Coyotes scored 90 points or more for the third time this season. Youngberg, a sophomore from Yankton, S.D., hit a career-best 5-of-9 three point field goals while grabbing three rebounds, handing out two assists and recording three steals in 22 minutes of action. A total of four Coyotes reached double figures, including Ashley Bjorkman (Vermillion, S.D.), who had 14 points, including 4-of-5 from three-point range. Jenna Hoffman (Mitchell, S.D.) had 12 points and five rebounds in 14 minutes of work. Bridget Yoerger (Hinton, Iowa) had 10 points and five rebounds. Natalie Carda (Beresford, S.D.) had nine points and six rebounds as well as three blocked shots. Point guard Shannon Daly (Groton, S.D.) totaled seven points, five assists and three rebounds in 15 minutes of work. Yoerger reached double figures for the sixth straight game and the 11th time this season. She has 28 career double digit scoring games.

Overall, the Coyotes hit 31-of-65 field goals for 47.7 percent, including 13-of-23 three-point field goals for 56.5 percent. USD, which was 15-of-23 from the free throw line, reached double digits in three-point field goals for the sixth time this season.

Chadron State was led by Sunni Busch with 15 points and seven rebounds. CSC made 13-of-61 field goals for 21.3 percent but made just 4-of-22 three-point field goals for 18.2 percent. CSC hit 16-of-19 free throws for 84.2 percent.

South Dakota rushed to a quick 13-5 lead after Yoerger scored on a lay-up at the 16:20 mark of the first half. The Coyotes continued to build on the lead, moving ahead 23-9 at the 11:55 mark of the first half after Carda converted a pair of free throws. A lay-up by Daly increased the margin to 20 points at 34-14 with 7:26 left in the opening half. A three-point shot by Bjorkman enabled the Coyotes to build a 26-point lead (49-26) at the 2:31 mark. USD led, 53-23, after Youngberg hit a three-point shot with a minute left in the first half. Chadron State closed the gap to 53-25 at the break. South Dakota was able to build a large first half lead by forcing CSC into 11 turnovers (17 for the game) and forging an 18-4 points off turnovers advantage. South Dakota also came out on fire by making 18-of-33 field goals for 54.5 percent in the first half. Perhaps more impressive was its three-point shooting. The Coyotes canned 9-of-12 shots from three-point range and scored season-high 53 points in the first half.

Like the first half, USD head coach Chad Lavin used his entire bench in the second half. Everyone on the Coyote team played from 10 to 22 minutes.

USD moved the lead to 62-27 on a jumper by Yoerger at the 16:25 mark. Later, USD led 72-32 when Kara Iverson (Yankton, S.D.) made a pair of free throws with 10:11 left in the game. Youngberg hit another three-point shot to give the Coyotes an 82-43 lead with 4:48 left in the game. A jumper by Iversen with 11 seconds left in the game provided USD with a 46-point lead, which was USD's largest advantage of the game.

Next for the Coyote Women's Team is its NCC home opener with Augustana at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 6 at the DakotaDome.
