PITTSBURG, KAN. -- South Dakota senior running back Stefan Logan was named today (July 24, 2006) to the 2006 Division II Preseason All-American squad by Don Hansen's Football Gazette.
Logan, who is the only NCC running back on the list, earned his third preseason All-America honor from a national publication this summer. Earlier, he was named to the Street and Smith magazine first team and Lindy's magazine second team.
A total of 148 players representing all four geographic regions of NCAA Division II were named to the Don Hansen Football Gazette's D-II All-America team.
A native of Miami, Fla., Logan will be a candidate for the Harlon Hill Trophy (top player in Division II) this fall. Logan, who owns 13 schools records at USD, rushed for 1,751 yards (8.1 yard average), which ranked fourth in NCAA Division II and led the NCC in 2005. Logan is the career rushing leader at South Dakota, accumulating 4,251 yards in his first three seasons as a Coyote. A three-time All-NCC selection, Logan is the first USD player to record three-straight 1,000-yard rushing seasons (1,155, 2003; 1,345, 2004; 1,751, 2005)
In his stellar career, Logan has a school record 24, 100-yard rushing games and he is averaging 132 yards rushing per game in his career. He has established the school mark for career all-purpose yards with 5,189 yards. Logan owns the school record for rushing yards in a game with 295 vs. Truman State in 2005. Logan also owns school marks with a 98-yard TD run (Truman State, 2005) and 90-yard TD reception (Nebraska-Omaha, 2005) in the same season. A year ago, he was named to four All-American teams (D2football.com, College Sports Report, Daktronics, Inc., and Football Gazette) in 2005.
The Coyotes, which opens its fall pre-season camp on August 12, will face Quincy University in a special Thursday night home opener on August 31 at the DakotaDome at 7 p.m. South Dakota returns 15 starters from a squad that was nationally-ranked all season in 2005. The 2005 Coyotes finished their second straight 9-2 season and again mounted a 4-2 record in conference play, which earned USD its first league crown since 1978.
