The University of South Dakota women's basketball team, which had four players score in double figures, posted a 91-64 non-conference win over Colorado Christian on Monday night at the DakotaDome.
With the win, USD improved to 2-0 on the season and won their fifth straight home game dating back to last season. For the first time since the 1993-94 season, the Coyotes put together back-to-back 90 point games. In fact, USD has scored exactly 91 points in each of its first two games this season (91-73 over Mount Marty on Saturday). It is also the third straight year that the Coyotes have opened the season with a 2-0 record. With the loss, Colorado Christian dropped to 0-6 on the season.
For the second straight game, USD was led in scoring by senior shooting guard Jeana Hoffman (Mitchell, S.D), who had 18 points, five rebounds and a steal in 26 minutes of work. Hoffman hit 4-of-8 three-point shots and now has made 9-of-18 on the season. She has now made 80 three-point field goals in her career at USD.
Also reaching double figures for USD was junior forward Bridget Yoerger (Hinton, Iowa) with 15 points, junior forward Maggie Youngberg (Yankton, S.D.) with 13 and senior point guard Shannon Daly (Groton, S.D.) with 12 points. Sophomore guard Jasmine Mosley (Bellevue, Neb.) had a career-high with seven assists while scoring five points and grabbing five rebounds in 20 minutes of action. USD sophomore guard Kelly Fargen (Brookings, S.D.) had a career-high with eight points.
Overall, USD hit 34-of-71 shots from the field for 47.9 percent. The Coyotes reached double digits in three-point field goals for the second straight game. USD made 10-of-29 for 34.5 percent against Colorado Christian. In addition, USD made 13-of-17 free throws for 76.5 percent.
Colorado Christian was led in scoring by Sara Davis with 17 points, including 3-of-3 from three-point range. Guard Talmai Aquirre had 14 points. The Cougars hit 22-of-55 field goals for 38.2 percent, including 8-of-18 from beyond the three-point arc. They were 14-of-19 from the free throw line for 73.7 percent.
For the second straight game, USD used a fast start to gain control of the game. The Coyotes had four steals in the opening two minutes of the game and raced to a 10-0 lead after Jeana Hoffman hit a three-point field goal at the 18:09 mark. USD built the lead to 31-12 when Kelly Fargen hit 1-of-2 free throws at the 10:14 mark. The Coyotes had a 10-5 run to increase the lead to 41-17 at the 6:57 mark following a free throw by Jenna Hoffman (Mitchell, S.D.). The Cougars made a run at the Coyotes by connecting on three straight three-point field goals to cut the deficit to 43-27 at the 4:28 mark. However, USD quickly regained control with a 9-4 run to finish the half and carried a 52-31 advantage into halftime. The Coyotes scored 20 points in the paint and had 19 points off turnovers in the opening half. USD converted 20-of-39 field goals for 51.3 percent in the opening half. The Coyotes hit just 4-of-13 shots from three-point range but were able to convert 8-of-11 free throws. Colorado Christian hit 12-of-26 field goals for 46.2 percent, including 4-of-7 from three-point range in the opening half. They were 3-of-5 from the foul stripe.
The Coyotes quickly quelled any comeback hopes by the Cougars by opening the second half with a 17-7 run which provided USD with a 69-39 advantage at the 16:07 mark. A three-pointer by Jeana Hoffman helped USD to a 32-point lead (74-42) at the 14:04 mark. Later, USD grabbed an 82-44 lead when freshman Amber Hegge (Crofton, Neb.) converted a lay-up with 11:04 to play. Gradually, the Cougars cut the deficit under 30 in the final 10 minutes of the game.
Next for the Coyotes will be a road trip to Colorado. The Coyotes will face Adams State at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 23, before facing the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
