COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - Despite a career-high 31 points by senior guard
Jeana Hoffman, The University of South Dakota women's basketball team (2-1) dropped an 83-79 decision to Adams State (2-1) in non-conference action on Friday afternoon at the Hyatt Place Mountain Lion Classic in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Hoffman (Sr., Mitchell, S.D.) hit 9-of-18 shots from the field, including 5-of-10 from three-point range for her 31 points. Hoffman, whose previous career-best was 24 points last year, added four assists, three rebounds and two steals in 39 minutes of action. USD also received a career-high 15 points from Jasmine Mosley (So., Bellevue, Neb.), who also had eight rebounds, two steals and an assist. Mosley made 6-of-7 shots from the field, including 2-of-4 from three-point range. Junior forward Bridget Yoerger (Hinton, Iowa) had 11 points, five rebounds and a career-high five steals. Yoerger reached double digits in scoring for the 42nd time in her career.
Overall, USD made 28-of-70 shots for 40 percent, including 10-of-29 three-point shots for 34.5 percent. It was the third straight game that the Coyotes recorded 10 or more three-pointers in a game. USD was just 13-of-22 from the free throw line for 59.1 percent.
Adams State was led by Nicole Tatum with 25 points and Laurel Mortensen with 21 points. Overall, Adams State hit a sizzling 30-of-53 shots from the field for 56.6 percent. They also connected on 6-of-13 three-point shots for 46.2 percent and 17-of-29 free throws for 58.6 percent. Adams State won the rebound battle, 44-34. Tatum, who was averaging just five points a game this season, came off the bench to hit 9-of-11 field goals and 7-of-9 free throws for her 25 points.
South Dakota jumped to a 13-6 lead at the 14:15 mark of the opening half following a three-pointer by Mosley. USD's Jeana Hoffman knocked down a three-point point shot at 11:56 mark to help USD build an 18-10 advantage.
Adams State answered USD's opening surge with a 14-2 run to grab a 24-20 lead at the 8:04 mark. USD tied the game at 24-24 and trailed just 27-26 at the 6:31 mark after Hoffman again scored. However, the Grizzlies scored four straight points for a 31-26 lead with 5:43 to play in the half.
With 1:40 to play, senior guard Shannon Daly (Sr., Groton S.D.) hit a jumper to draw USD within 38-37. After an Adams State basket, Hoffman hit another three-pointer as the Coyotes closed to within 41-40 with 18 seconds left in the half. However, Adams State received a three-point shot from Vera Jo Bustos at the halftime buzzer for a 44-40 advantage.
The Grizzlies had a hot-shooting first half as they made 16-of-27 field goals for 59.3 percent while USD hit just 17-of-37 from the field for 45.9 percent. USD made 6-of-16 three-pointers for 37.5 percent while the Grizzlies made 4-of-7 from long distance. USD missed all three of its free throws while Adams State made 8-of-14 in the opening half.
USD rallied to grab a 48-46 lead at the 16:02 mark of the second half after Jeana Hoffman's three-point basket. The Grizzlies responded with a 8-2 run to take a 54-48 lead at the 14:31 mark after Kelsie Kruger scored inside. USD answered with a 7-2 run to pull within 56-55 at the 10:48 mark of the second half.
Adams State responded with a 15-7 run to build a 71-62 lead with 4:57 to play in the game. Down 78-69 with 1:15 to play in the game, USD made the game interesting. A three-point play by Mosley closed the gap to 81-78 with 25 seconds left in the game. After both teams traded free throws, Jenna Hoffman's (Sr., Mitchell, S.D.) three-point shot with seven seconds was off the mark as USD lost its first-ever meet with the Grizzlies.
The Coyotes will face host UC-Colorado Springs on Saturday night at 7 p.m. (CST) in the second round of the Mountain Lion Classic at Colorado Springs, Colo.
