Late Run Propels Coyotes Past Dixie State, 80-62

VERMILLION, S.D. -- An 18-1 run in the closing minutes lifted The University of South Dakota women's basketball team to an 80-62 victory over Dixie State College Saturday in Vermillion, S.D.

Ashley Wiemann (Sr., Vermillion, S.D.) paced the Coyotes (6-1) with 21 points on a career-high seven 3-pointers. Bridget Yoerger (Sr., Hinton, Iowa) added a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds for USD, with Jasmine Mosley (Jr., Bellevue, Neb.) adding a career-high 14 points.

The win was the sixth straight for USD under first-year Coach Ryun Williams.

The Coyotes held Dixie State to just five points - and without a field goal -- over the last 7:34 of the game.

USD's final round was started by a basket by Kelli Fargen (Jr., Brookings, S.D.) with 5:00 left. Wiemann followed with a three-pointer as the Coyotes took a 67-62 lead with 4:03 left.

The Coyotes held a 72-62 lead with 2:06 left when they put the game away. Maggie Youngberg (Sr., Yankton, S.D.) hit a three-pointer, and moments later, Yoerger converted a three-point play to help extend USD's advantage to 78-62 with 51 seconds left.

USD led 40-30 at halftime, thanks to 50 percent shooting from the field. Wiemann paced the Coyotes with 12 points.

Dixie State (1-4) battled back early in the second half to tie the game at 43-43, and the game stayed close until the final minutes, when the Coyotes went on the decisive run.

Youngberg finished with nine points for USD. Fargen gave the Coyotes good minutes off the bench and finished with seven points. Mosley and Annie Roche (RFr., Vermillion, S.D.) had four assists each, while Mosley had four steals. The Coyotes shot 52.9 percent from the field (27-of-52) and 10-of-22 from three-point range (45.5 percent). The Coyotes held Dixie State to just 36.1 percent shooting from the field, including 27.6 percent from three-point range.

USD resumes action on Sunday, Dec. 7 at home against the University of Sioux Falls. Game time is 3 p.m. at the DakotaDome in Vermillion, S.D.

Notes: USD is now 4-1 in Vermillion this season...Yoerger is now 11th on USD's all-time scoring list with 1,276 points...Dixie State's bench outscored USD, 23-11...the Coyotes will be home for the entire month of December with seven games.
