VERMILLION -- The University of South Dakota women's basketball team opened the game on a 20-0 run and rolled to a 63-24 victory over Mayville State (N.D.) in action Thursday night in Vermillion, S.D.
The victory extended USD's winning streak to eight games under first-year head coach Coach Ryun Williams.
USD (8-1) was led by Bridget Yoerger (Sr., Hinton, Iowa), who had a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. She also added a career-high four blocks Ashley Wiemann (Sr., Vermillion, S.D.) also added 15 points, while Maggie Youngberg (Sr., Yankton, S.D.) added 10.
The Coyotes held Mayville (2-11) scoreless for the first 10:35 of the game as they built a commanding 20-0 lead.
Later in the half, USD extended its lead to 32-7 after a three-pointer by Maggie Youngberg (Sr., Yankton, S.D.), and moments later, Bridget Yoerger's three-point play with 1:16 left extended USD's lead to 35-7.
USD led 35-9 at halftime, thanks in large part to its defense. The Coyotes held Mayville State to just 3-of-17 shooting (17.6 percent) and forced 18 turnovers.
Yoerger had a big first half for USD with nine points and 11 rebounds. Wiemann led USD with 12 points in the first half, all on 3-pointers. The Coyotes hit 6-of-14 three-pointers in the first half. The Coyotes had a 20-15 edge in rebounds in the first half.
USD opened the second half on a 10-0 run as it extended its advantage to 45-9, and the Coyotes extended their lead to as many as 43 in the second half.
Annie Roche (RFr., Vermillion, S.D.) added eight points and four assists for the Coyotes. Wiemann tied a career-high four steals for USD, while Yoerger led with three steals. Haley Juhnke (So., Vivian, S.D.) had a career-high six points for the Coyotes.
USD finished with a 41-30 edge in rebounds and forced 30 Comet turnovers.
The Coyotes resume action at home on Saturday against the College of St. Mary. Game time is 6 p.m. at the DakotaDome in Vermillion.
Notes: The 24 points were the second-lowest allowed by USD since 1976-77...the Coyotes are 41-3 since the start of the 2007-08 season...a total of 12 Coyote players played eight minutes or more in the game...USD has led at halftime in every game this season.
