VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota soccer team will play two home contests this week as the Coyotes take on Wayne State College on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 4 p.m. and then face Northern State University on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 1 p.m.
THE RECORDS:
The University of South Dakota will enter Wednesday's game with a 1-4-0 record...Wayne State College has a 0-4-1 record...Northern State will enter the game with a 2-2-0 record.

Wayne State College- Wayne State College enters Wednesday's contest with a 0-4-1 mark...the Wildcats lost to unbeaten Northwest Missouri State, 3-1 in their last contest Sunday afternoon...WSC is in its third season under Head Coach Brooke Bredenberg, who is 11-29-5 in her tenure with the Wildcats...Valerie Robinson leads the Wildcats with two goals...Wayne State competes in NCAA Division II and is a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Northern State University- Northern State University opened the season with a 2-2 mark, falling to Mesa State, 3-1 on Sunday...the Wolves are in their 11th season under Head Coach Steve Kehm, who has compiled a 124-66-15 mark at the school...Maggie Fedor leads Northern's offensive attack with two goals and two assists...goalkeeper Kit Grace has eight saves in three games for Northern...NSU competes in NCAA Division II and is a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
The University of South Dakota-The Coyotes have a 1-4-0 overall record...USD won against Southwest Minnesota State University last Wednesday as Sarah Halbach hit the game winning goal in the 107th minute for a 4-3 double overtime victory...this past weekend USD was in El Paso, Texas where they lost to the University of Texas El Paso 4-3 and then fell to Houston Baptist University 4-2...South Dakota is led by Sarah Halbach and Katie Quinones as each have four goals on the season...Quinones scored all four of her goals this past weekend while also recording one assist...USD's Jen Ogren has recorded 20 saves in the net and has a 1-3-0 record while Ann Opsahl has a 0-1-0 record with 13 saves.
SMSU GAME RECAP:
Sarah Halbach's goal at the 107-minute mark in the second overtime lifted USD to a 4-3, come-from-behind win over Southwest Minnesota State. SMSU jumped to an early 3-0 lead, keyed by two goals by Kelly Fitzgerald, but USD battled back from that three-goal deficit in the first half to cut the Mustang lead to 3-2 after the opening 45 minutes. Sami Spokas and Halbach scored the first-half goals for USD, while Ashley Oswald and Taylor Gray added assists. Halbach's first goal was on a penalty kick. In the second half, USD tied the game at 3-3 at the 83-minute mark after Katie Quinones scored on a penalty kick. Jennifer Ogren provided more than 82 minutes of scoreless play in net for the Coyotes, recording two saves. USD had a 13-6 advantage in shots on goal and a 24-11 edge in shots overall in the victory.
EL PASO TRIP RECAP:
The University of Texas-El Paso's Cortney Casey scored the game winning goal in the 83rd minute to lead UTEP to a 4-3 victory over USD on Friday. UTEP started off the game strong scoring its first goal in the 19th minute and then added its second goal of the game in the 24th minute of play. South Dakota however battled back as Katie Quinones scored USD's first goal in the 30th minute. Sarah Halbach then tied up the score in the 42nd minute putting one in the net off an assist from Quinones. Quinones scored her second goal of the game in the 52nd minute to give the Coyotes their first lead of the game. The Miners were able to tie the game at 3-3 in the 69th minute and then earned the victory with a goal in the 83rd minute.
Despite an early goal from Katie Quinones, USD fell to Houston Baptist University 4-2. Quinones knocked in an unassisted goal 11:21 in the game to put the Coyotes up 1-0. However, HBU's Ana Viscariello responded with two unanswered goals to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead. Just over 14 minutes into the second half, Sarah Halbach tied the game at 2-2 with a goal off an assist from Sarah Wheeler. With the game tied at 2-2, the Huskies scored two-straight goals to earn the victory. Jennifer Ogren (So., Raymore, Mo.) took the loss in goal for USD, she allowed all four goals while making four saves.
2008 Notes:
- Sarah Halbach and Katie Quinones lead the team with four goals.
- Halbach has a team-high 15 shots and 9 shots on goal while Quinones has 8 shots and 5 shots on goal. Quinones leads the team with a .625 shot on goal percentage.
- USD's Jennifer Ogren has 20 saves while Ann Opsahl has 13 saves in goal.
- South Dakota is part of the Great West Conference and is in its first year competing as NCAA Division I.
2007 SEASON REVIEW:
USD finished the 2007 season with a 7-10-3 overall record while recording a 4-7-1 North Central Conference (NCC) record. The U will have a young squad in 2008 as five players graduated, including All-NCC first team selection Brooke Youds and All-NCC second team honoree, Katie Freeman. South Dakota however will return 13 individuals from last year's squad and will be led by seniors, Sarah Halbach, Angela O'Loughlin, and Ann Opsahl and junior Katie Whithorn.
KEY RETURNERS:
Sarah Halbach (Senior)- Led the team with seven goals and 15 points last season while charting a team high 23 shots on goal...in her career she has 19 goals, ranking her first in career goals scored at South Dakota...named to the Daktronics All-Central Region second team last season and was a 2005 NSCAA All-Region selection as a freshman.
Angela O'Loughlin (Senior)- Second on the team in goals scored last season with five...tallied 11 points while having 31 shots with 15 shots on goal.
Ann Opsahl (Senior)- Played in 15 games while starting in nine last season...finished with 78 saves in 1355 minutes of play and a 2-4-1 record.
Katie Whithorn (Junior)- Started in all games the past two seasons and recorded 1626 minutes in 2007...has two career goals and two career assists.
