USD Women Win over Colorado School of Mines 52-48

GOLDEN, COLO. -- Ashley Wiemann scored a team-high 15 points to lead The University of South Dakota women's basketball team to a thrilling a 52-48 win over the Colorado School of Mines in action Friday afternoon in Golden, Colo.

USD improves to 11-2 overall while snapping the Colorado School of Mines five-game winning streak as the Orediggers fall to 6-5 overall.

South Dakota, who trailed by as much as a seven points twice in the second half, took the lead late in the second half at 47-46 after a big 3-pointer by Ashley Wiemann (Sr., Vermillion, S.D) with 2:51 remaining. After a CSM basket, the Yotes matched it with a basket from Bridget Yoerger (Sr., Hinton, Iowa) off an offensive rebound to give the Coyotes another one point lead (49-48) with just over two minutes remaining.

Maggie Youngberg (Sr., Yankton, S.D.) then went to the free-throw line with 14 seconds remaining and drained two free-throws to put the Coyotes up 51-48. Yoerger then capped off the win hitting one free-throw at the end of the game to give South Dakota its second straight victory.

Wiemann led the team with 15 points while making three 3-pointers. Yoerger had a double-double as she scored 12 points while also adding a team-high 12 rebounds. Youngberg was the third Coyote to reach double-figures in scoring as she added 10 points. Jasmine Mosley (Jr., Bellevue, Neb.) led the team with three assists while having seven rebounds.

In the first half of play, USD went on an 8-1 run which was capped off by a Maggie Youngberg three-pointer to tie the game at 18 apiece. USD then went on to gain its first lead of the game with 51 seconds remaining in the first half after Annie Roche (RFr., Vermillion, S.D.) hit two free-throws to put the Yotes up 27-26 going into halftime.

Wiemann lead the team with nine points in the first half while Kendra Schomer (So., Madison, Neb.) added five off the bench. CSM held a 25-13 edge in rebounds over USD in the first 20 minutes.

USD finished the game shooting a season low 29.5 percent from the field (13-44). The Coyotes were also out-rebounded 45-35 in the game. Colorado School of Mines also finished the game with a low shooting percentage as they shot 29.3 percent from the field. There was a stretch in the second half where in seven minutes of play both teams had scored just seven points.

Notes: This was USD's first road game since playing Buena Vista University on Nov. 25 in Storm Lake, Iowa...USD had played six-straight home games...Ashley Wiemann has 48 three-pointers on the season.
