VERMILLION, S.D. - Senior center Jasmine Mosley posted a career high 20 points and sophomore forward
Amber Hegge notched her third double-double of the season to lead The University of South Dakota women's basketball team to a 67-52 win over Mount Marty on Sunday afternoon in the DakotaDome.
The win moved USD to 4-4 on the season and dropped the Lancers to 13-2.
A native of Bellevue, Neb., Mosley connected on eight consecutive shots to open the game and finished 9-of-11 from the field, while Hegge (Crofton, Neb.) added 18 points and 10 rebounds to go with six assists and four blocks. Junior guard Abby Kinder (Granger, Ind.) had 11 points, including three treys, and four assists. The Coyotes shot 47.4 percent (21-of-49) as a team, while the Lancers knocked down 42.9 percent (27-of-57).
The Coyotes took an early 7-0 advantage behind Mosley, who knocked down a trey at the 18:50 mark. The Lancers closed the gap to 9-6, but eight turnovers by Mount Marty in the first 10 minutes allowed USD to notch a 7-0 run with back-to-back buckets by Hegge and a three by junior forward Jamie Young (Great Falls, Mont.).
South Dakota maintained at least an eight-point lead the majority of the rest of the first frame, as Mosley hit five more buckets down the stretch including a driving layup with 15 seconds left. Hegge added a three at the 5:35 mark to help the Coyotes claim a 39-24 halftime lead. Mosley had 17 points in the first half, just one off her career high, while Hegge added 11 and three assists. Kinder also had three assists in the first 20 minutes and Iverson hadtwo steals. USD shot 59 percent (17-of-29) in the first half and held the Lancers to 39 percent (9-of-23).
Mount Marty battled back early in the second half by hitting six of its first eight shots and causing four turnovers by the Coyotes to go on a 15-2 run and draw within 44-42 at the 13:50 mark. Kinder knocked down a trey to end the run and added another at the 10:35 mark, while Mosley added a basket to allow USD to pull away by eight at the halfway mark. Hegge added two more baskets and sophomore guard Annie Roche (Vermillion, S.D.) hit a three and another bucket as the Coyotes responded with a 12-2 run of their own to extend the lead back to 14 with 1:35 to go. Roche and Hegge hit free throws to seal the 67-52 final.
The Coyotes also got six rebounds from Kinder, while Mosley had five.
USD held Mount Marty, which had been shooting over 41 percent from the three-point line on the season, to just 20 percent in Sunday's game.
South Dakota continues its season with three straight road contests, starting with a 9 p.m. contest at Cal State Northridge on Dec. 29.
