LINCOLN, Neb. -- Cory Montgomery and Catheryn Redmond scored 14 points each to lead Nebraska to a 77-38 win over
The University of South Dakota women's basketball team in nonconference action Thursday night at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Neb.
Nebraska, which is just outside the top 25 in the latest coaches' poll rankings, improved to 7-0, while USD fell to 1-3.
Annie Roche (So., Vermillion, S.D.) led USD with eight points, while Teresa Case (Jr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) added seven.
USD battled hard against their foes from the Big 12 Conference but came up short.
Roche scored USD's first four points, and the Coyotes took a 6-4 lead after Jackie Hiebert (So., Maple Grove, Minn.) sank a basket at the 17:10 mark. Moments later, a Jasmine Mosley (Sr., Bellevue, Neb.) drained a jumper that pushed the lead to 8-5 with 14:35 left.
USD's defense was key early, holding Nebraska without a field goal for more than six minutes.
Nebraska's defense stepped up in the remaining minutes of the half, however. The Huskers went on a 15-1 run, keyed by five points by Kelsey Griffin, to take a 20-9 lead with 8:50 left in the first half. Abby Kinder (Jr., Granger, Ind.) ended the run with a three to help bring USD back within 20-12.
However, Yvonne Turner drained back-to-back three-pointers, starting an 11-0 Nebraska run to push the lead to 31-12.
Moments later, Turner converted a four-point play to push Nebraska's lead to 36-14. The Huskers took a 40-14 lead into halftime.
Turnovers were costly for USD in the first half, as the Coyotes committed 18, leading to 16 Husker points. USD shot 6-of-14 (42.9 percent). Roche led USD with six points, while Kinder had three. Amber Hegge (So., Crofton, Neb.) had three rebounds, while Mosley had two assists.
The Coyotes opened the second half with the first five points, as Roche hit two free throws and Kinder drained a three, to cut the gap to 40-19. Nebraska answered with 10 straight points to push the lead back to 50-19.
Kinder finished with six points and six rebounds for USD, while Jamie Young (Jr., Great Falls, Mon.) had five off the bench. Hegge led with three assists, while Mosley led with three steals.
USD finished the game shooting 37.8 percent, compared to 47.4 percent for Nebraska.
The Coyotes wrap up a three-game road swing with a contest at Santa Clara (Calif.) on Sunday, Dec. 6. The game tips off at 4 p.m. Central time. USD returns home for a game on Dec. 10 against Black Hills State.
