Case's Three in Final Seconds Lifts Coyotes to Thrilling 69-66 Win Over Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif -- Teresa Case's three-pointer with two seconds left lifted The University of South Dakota to a thrilling 69-66 win over Santa Clara in women's basketball Sunday in Santa Clara, Calif.

USD (2-3) came back from an eight-point second half deficit to record its first road win of 2009-10.

Sophomore Amber Hegge (Crofton, Neb.) had a spectacular all-around performance for USD. She finished with career highs of 25 points, 15 rebounds and six assists and scored 21 of USD's 39 points in the second half.

The Coyotes were down eight at one point in the second half before Hegge led the comeback. She scored 16 straight points for USD as the Coyotes closed the gap to 51-48.

USD took the lead at 52-51 when Jamie Young (Jr., Great Falls, Mon.) scored with 6:03 left. Santa Clara (1-6) fought back to take a 58-54 lead when Meagan Fulps sank a three-pointer with 3:49 left.

Case (Jr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) hit a crucial three to cut the lead to 58-57. That three sparked an 11-1 Coyote run which saw USD build a 65-59 lead with 1:15 left. Hegge hit a three-pointer, followed by a layup by Abby Kinder (Jr., Granger, Ind.) and another three by Case, during that huge sequence.

Santa Clara cut the lead to 65-63 and was in position to tie, but Fulps was called for an offensive foul with 21 seconds left as Hegge stepped in and took the charge, disallowing what was the game-tying basket.

After Kinder hit 1-of-2 free throws, Santa Clara's 1/2s Alyssa Shoji drained a three-pointer to tie the game at 66-66.

USD called a timeout with 12 seconds left to set up the final possession. Hegge found Case in the corner for the game-winning shot, and the Coyotes had clinched a hard-fought win.

Case finished with a season-high nine points for USD, while Kara Iverson (Sr., Yankton, S.D.) also added nine. Young also had a season-high seven points for the Coyotes.

In the first half, the Broncos built their lead to 27-20 with 4:46 left in the first half before the Coyotes came back with an 8-0 run to take a 28-27 lead with 3:14 left. Annie Roche (So., Vermillion, S.D.) and Iverson each hit three-pointers, while Hegge added a basket, to help USD regain the lead.

Santa Clara scored four of the final six points of the first half to take a 31-30 lead into half.

Iverson had nine points in the first half, while Young had five and Jackie Hiebert (So., Maple Grove, Minn.) and Hegge four each. Hegge also had eight rebounds and three assists in the first half for USD.

In the second half, USD was down eight before rallying, thanks to Hegge's huge offensive effort.

The Coyotes return home this week to play host to Black Hills State on Thursday, Dec. 10. Game time is 7 p.m. at the DakotaDome in Vermillion, S.D.
