Box Score Vermillion, S.D. - The University of South Dakota women's soccer team notched two goals in less than two minutes to collect a 2-1 victory over North Dakota on Sunday in Vermillion. The win completed a weekend sweep of the Fighting Sioux, after a 3-2 double overtime USD victory on Friday, and moved the Coyotes to 2-2 on the season. UND dropped to 1-2.
Junior defender Emily Maas (Denver, Colo.) tallied the game-winning goal for South Dakota in the 72nd minute, as she struck on a North Dakota team that was reeling from surrendering a goal two minutes earlier. Maas made a long drive down the right side of the field and tangled with several UND defenders, but was able to stay on her feet and launch a long arching shot that made it over the North Dakota goalkeeper's hands and into the back of the net. The score was Maas' first since 2007 and was her first career game-winning goal.
Maas also assisted on a defensive effort from the Coyotes that stymied the Fighting Sioux most of the day. USD caught North Dakota's offense offside seven times and allowed just nine total shots to UND, including only two in the first half. North Dakota made its only shot on goal count, as Rachael Loomis headed a bouncing ball over USD's Jennifer Ogren (Raymore, Mo.) and into the back of the net in the 85th minute.
South Dakota got on the board courtesy of junior midfielder Katie Quinones (Rochester, Minn.) in the 70th minute. After notching all three goals against UND on Friday, Quinones settled a bouncing ball in the middle of the field and cranked out a shot that cleared UND's goalkeeper. Quinones and fellow junior midfielder Michelle Marshall (West Des Moines, Iowa) led the Coyote offense with three shots each, while freshman forward Nathalia Cerceau (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) notched two shots. USD finished with 13 shots, and directed four on goal.
The Coyotes continue their season when they host Drake at the USD Soccer Field on Sept. 13 at 1 p.m.
