Kinder Carries Coyotes Past Chicago State, 73-49

VERMILLION, S.D. - Junior guard Abby Kinder posted a season-high 20 points and the University of South Dakota women's basketball team shot 78 percent in the first half en route to a 73-49 blowout of Chicago State on Thursday night in the DakotaDome. The win moved the Coyotes to 10-11 overall and 3-3 in the Great West Conference, while CSU dropped to 10-15 and 5-3.

Kinder (Granger, Ind.) notched down five treys in the first half and added five points in the second half, while sophomore forward Amber Hegge (Crofton, Neb.) chipped in 11 points and five assists and sophomore guard Annie Roche (Vermillion, S.D.) had 13 points. USD shot 55 percent (23-of-42) for the game, including 59 percent (13-of-22) behind the arc, while holding the Cougars to 40 percent (21-of-53) from the field. USD's 14 threes during the game were just three short of the single-game record.

South Dakota hit its first three shots from the floor, including a three from Roche, to jump to a 7-0 lead at the 17:57 mark. Chicago State cut the lead to three, but USD responded with a 9-2 run thanks to a trey from Kinder and free throws from Roche and Hegge to built a 10-point lead at 16-6.

The two squads exchanged baskets until consecutive threes from Kinder and Roche extended the Coyote advantage to 22-10 with 9:20 left.

The Cougars slowly cut the lead to six over the next four minutes at 28-22 until two threes from junior guard Teresa Case (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and two more from Kinder quickly put the Coyotes back up by double digits at 40-26 at the 2:36 mark. Roche also knocked down another to give USD 10 threes in the first half and put South Dakota up 43-29 at half. Kinder had 15 points in the frame thanks to five treys, while Roche chipped in 11 points. USD shot 78 percent (14-of-18) from the field, including 71 percent (10-of-14) behind the arc, in the half.

USD gradually grew the lead to as many as 17 in the opening minutes of the second half. Senior center Jasmine Mosley (Bellevue, Neb.) and Hegge hit free throws and a trey from senior forward Kara Iverson (Yankton, S.D.) put USD up 52-35 at the 13:04 mark, before the Coyotes crafted a 14-2 run over the next eight minutes. Roche, Kinder and Mosley connected on free throws, Case hit a three and Hegge converted an old-fashion three-point play during the spurt, as USD climbed in front 66-41 and the Coyotes cruised from there.

Mosley also added 10 points and a team-high six rebounds for USD, while Case had nine off the bench.

South Dakota continues its season at in-state rival South Dakota State on Monday. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
