Hegge Leads USD Rout of Utah Valley, 68-39

Vermillion, S.D. -- Sophomore forward Amber Hegge posted 16 points to guide the University of South Dakota women's basketball team to a dominant 68-39 win over Utah Valley on Thursday night in the DakotaDome.

The victory moved the Coyotes to 11-12 overall and 4-3 in the Great West Conference, while the Wolverines dropped to 5-21 and 1-8.

Hegge (Crofton, Neb.) connected on 7-of-10 from the floor, including one three, and grabbed six rebounds and three steals. Senior center Jasmine Mosley (Bellevue, Neb.) added 11 points on a 5-of-6 showing, while junior guard Abby Kinder (Granger, Ind.) and senior forward Kara Iverson (Yankton, S.D.) both had nine. USD shot 48 percent (27-of-56) from the field and 42 percent (10-of-24) behind the arc, while holding UVU to 26 percent from the field (13-of-50) and from three (6-of-23).

The Coyotes opened the game firing on all cylinders to jump to a 15-0 lead in the first seven minutes. Hegge started the scoring with a three and added an old fashion three-point play, while Mosley had six points of her own before the 13:15 mark. Utah Valley got on the board with a free throw 30 seconds later, but wouldn't hit a shot from the field until a three with 7:32 in the half to make it 22-4. The Wolverines started the contest by missing their first 13 shots and committing eight turnovers in the first half.

USD heated up from outside to make four treys in the final six minutes. Iverson, Kinder, freshman guard Sam Mehr (Apple Valley, Minn.) and sophomore guard Annie Roche (Vermillion, S.D.) all connected from downtown, as the Coyotes finished the half shooting 53 percent (8-of-15) from behind the arc and 53 percent (16-of-30) overall. Hegge had 10 points and four rebounds in the first half, while Iverson, Mosley and Kinder all added six points. UVU hit 20 percent (5-of-25) in the first frame.

It was more of the same in the second half, as the Coyotes stretched their lead to as many as 31 at 58-27 and Utah Valley never got within 24. Hegge had 10 points in the half, while Kinder, Iverson and Mosley each added six.

Jackie Hiebert (So., Maple Grove, Minn.) had a solid game off the bench for USD with eight points and five rebounds. Mosley had six assists while Hegge had three steals.

South Dakota returns to action on Sunday against SIU Edwardsville. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m. in the DakotaDome.
